New data shows the number of “secret Sadiq tax” charges has risen by 71 percent during the mayor's tenure.

Mayors have legitimacy. the power to impose a levy, known as a “mayor's order”, on the population they serve.

Households in London are currently charged an average of £471 per household, the highest in the country for this type of tax.

When Sadiq Khan took office in 2016, the levy had increased by an average of £276.

And the Mayor of London's draft budget includes an increase of £37, that is, nine percent.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) introduced the Mayoral Commandment in 2000 when the position of Mayor was first created under the leadership of Ken Livingstone. He oversaw the biggest growth, increasing it by 152 percent by the end of his mayoralty in 2008.

While Boris Johnson was mayor of London – between 2008 and 2016 – he left the mayoralty the prescription is 11 percent lower than he found, the numbers show.

Tory sources accused Khan of charging “Sadiq's secrecy”. tax” on Londoners and having a “messiah complex” which includes spending huge amounts of taxpayers' money on “vanity projects” such as renaming railway lines.

Of the 11 mayors in England elected until 2024, only four have introduced a mayoral mandate, which is levied on top of council tax.The Conservative Party noted that these four cities – Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, the Liverpool City Region and London – are led by a Labor mayor.

In Greater Manchester, the size of the mayor's order has grown during Andy Burnham's time in office by 66 percent and now stands at £113 per family.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough first introduced the £12 ruling last year and has tripled it. this year to £36. The Liverpool rate has remained at £19 since its introduction in 2019.

Meanwhile Andy Street, the Conservative mayor of the West Midlands, and Lord Houchen, the Conservative mayor of Tees Valley, do not charge families pay the surcharge.

Unlike most other combined authorities, the GLA, which Mr Khan oversees, is responsible for the police and fire services.

Earlier this year, Mr Khan was accused of “virtue signaling nonsense” after renaming the London Overground. lines as a sign of respect for multiculturalism and feminism.

He announced that the 103 miles of interconnecting surface network tracks, currently marked orange on transit maps, would be divided into six new lines.

    ” Sadiq destroyed London”

Louis French, Conservative MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup, said: “For eight long years Sadiq Khan ran London and he ran it badly. Crime has increased. Police are taking special measures, and the transport network is riddled with delays.

“But it’s not just drivers who are paying the price for Khan’s misguided ideology and City Hall’s mismanagement. At every opportunity he raised his share of council tax for Londoners. Sadiq has destroyed London, and Londoners are paying for it.”

Total council tax amounts at the borough and city hall share in London are actually lower than other mayor-led regions, averaging £1,906 for Band D properties in 2024-25. This is largely a product of councils such as Wandsworth, Westminster and Hammersmith & Fulham have the lowest rates in the country.

However, due to the GLA, Londoners have been hit with the steepest overall rate rise in five years – 28 per cent. Since Mr Khan took office, total council tax bills have risen by 45 per cent.

The figures relate to mid-priced properties – those that fell into band D when they were assessed at the Open Market in 1991.

Mr Khan's spokesman said: “This election is a tight two-horse race between Sadiq and a far-right conservative mayoral candidate who is completely out of touch with our city and its values “.
