In recent years, information about the new generation Niva has repeatedly appeared, and one of the options was a crossover built on the platform of the new Duster. We imagined what could come of it.
VAZ-2121 Niva has been produced since 1977 to this day. Over the years, the car has received many updates; the latest version can be considered the Niva Bronto with a new interior. However, everyone has been waiting for a completely new model for a long time, and one was expected just this year, but due to the termination of cooperation with Renault, the prospects for the new Niva have become completely vague. That doesn’t stop us from imagining what a new Russian crossover based on the new generation Duster could look like.

The new Duster, originally launched under the Dacia brand, was officially unveiled late last year. It received a modern appearance with a faceted style, which is quite suitable for the possible heir of the Niva. At the same time, the crossover depicted in the renderings received a number of changes in accordance with the characteristic features of the original domestic SUV. The main one, of course, can be called the “eyebrows” of the direction indicators, located above the main headlight blocks. There is also a new radiator grille with conventionally hexagonal bars, made in the style of fresh crossovers and cross-versions of Lada, while there is no so-called X-face (according to some reports, the Russian company will get rid of it in the near future). A horizontal stamping appeared on the side, stretching from the headlights to the lanterns, and behind the rear side windows there was a decorative element in the form of three slits, also referencing the original Niva. As for the rear, the main element here is the new lights of a relatively simple shape, inspired by the design of the Niva in the first years of production (its photos are in the gallery just above).

The new generation Duster, which was supposed to serve as the basis for the future Niva, has moved from the old B0 platform to the modern CMF-B, which also underpins the latest Dacia Logan, Sandero and Jogger. The length of the new crossover is 4343 mm, width – 1809 mm, height – 1656 mm, wheelbase – 2657 mm. Ground clearance of the front-wheel drive version is 209 mm, all-wheel drive is 217 mm. The most significant changes in the engine range can be considered the absence of diesel engines in the new generation. As for the rest, the base model is the three-cylinder 1.0 TCe LPG (100 hp), which runs on gasoline and propane. There is also a mild hybrid with a 1.2 TCe petrol turbo engine (130 hp) and a 48-volt starter-generator, and only this version can be all-wheel drive. At the top of the range is the Dacia Duster Hybrid 140 with an installation similar to that of the similar Dacia Jogger station wagon: it includes a four-cylinder naturally aspirated 1.6 (94 hp), an electric motor (49 hp), a starter-generator and a 1.2 kW battery *h, total output – 140 hp.

Meanwhile, based on sales results for the first quarter of 2024, the Niva became the most popular model among SUVs and crossovers.
