“He became the victim of a cruel, ruthless killer who, apparently, due to his ideology, saw the police as his enemy. Because they defend the free, democratic constitutional state that he wants to abolish… political Islam is the greatest threat to our security and freedom.»
Mr Stürzenberger was stabbed in the face and leg during an attack in Mannheim on Friday morning when the attacker, identified by police as Suleiman A, a 25-year-old Afghan national, attacked him with a knife.
The attacker then stabbed the police officer in the neck. Named by German media as 29-year-old Ruven L., the officer fell into a coma and died in hospital over the weekend.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the “horrific” attack and called for the perpetrator to be “severely punished.”
