VELIKY NOVGOROD, June 8 The sweet shop of the merchant Plotnikov, beloved by the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, described in the novel “The Brothers Karamazov” , recreated in Staraya Russa, Novgorod region, reports the vice-governor of the region Elena Kirilova on her page on the VKontakte social network.
She clarified that entrepreneur Yulia Komarova and her team “City Tourism Center” created the “Plotnikovs’ Shop” in the city center. The store opened next to where a merchant's grocery had been in the late 1870s.
< br />“This is a reconstruction of the grocery store of the merchant of the II guild Pavel Ivanovich Plotnikov, where Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, during his stay in Staraya Russa, loved to buy gifts and sweets. And it was this store that Dostoevsky described in the novel “The Brothers Karamazov,” said Kirilova.
According to her, the store displays antique household items that are associated with the pre-revolutionary history of Staraya Russa, a collection of postcards from the late 19th — early 20th centuries, and products from local producers

As the tourist information center «Rus Novgorodskaya» clarifies, the shop on Voskresenskaya Street, 8 sells the writer's favorite marshmallow, old Russian fudge with salt and gift gingerbread cookies, natural soap, scrubs and bath bombs with mineral salt, a reprint of the newspaper «Mineral Waters Reference Sheet» from 1881, souvenirs with quotes and books by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The interior is stylized in the 19th century, and the employees are dressed in costumes of a bygone era. A 10-room boutique hotel and a teahouse will also open next to the shop. The project became possible thanks to a regional grant from the All-Russian Competition for the Development of the Tourism Industry.
The city of Staraya Russa received the status of “Silver Necklace of Russia” in 2024. This is one of the largest cities in the region, where Dostoevsky's former dacha is located, which now houses the writer's house-museum.
