A naturally aspirated 1.5 and a turbo engine of the same volume are announced for the compact SUV. The model will probably make its official premiere this year.
The joint venture SAIC Volkswagen has certified the Volkswagen Tharu XR crossover: photos and main characteristics have been added to the database of the Ministry of Industry of the People's Republic of China. Obviously, the SUV will be positioned as the younger brother of the VW Tharu model (an analogue of the Russian defunct VW Taos), which is produced by the same joint venture.

In fact, before us, apparently, is a restyled version of the local Volkswagen T-Cross (the pre-reform five-door is also made by SAIC Volkswagen). By the way, the T-Cross itself has many faces: there are also European and Brazilian SUVs of the same name (they were recently updated), the Chinese Tacqua SUV from the FAW Volkswagen JV and the Indian Taigun (from India it is supplied to other developing markets, but as the T-Cross). Well, let us remind you that a year ago the Chinese pulled a trick with the appearance of a more affordable version of the VW Lavida sedan — then SAIC Volkswagen brought the Lavida XR to the market, that is, a variation of the Virtus.

Tharu XR differs from other relatives in its design. The SUV has original bumpers, headlights and taillights. In addition, the front features horizontal decorative dies in the style of the new generation Chinese VW Tiguan L Pro: they can be black or silver. The rear roof pillars have inserts — like the Indian VW Taigun. The interior is not exposed yet.

Wheelbase is the same 2651 mm. Dimensions of the true Tharu: 4458/1841/1632 mm, distance between the axles – 2680 mm.

Tharu XR is certified with a 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol engine and a turbo engine of the same volume with a power of 110 and 160 hp. respectively. The Chinese T-Cross also has similar engines. Most likely, like the pre-reform model, the SUV with the prefix will be offered exclusively with front-wheel drive. The larger Volkswagen Tharu is available with turbo fours 1.5 (160 hp) and 2.0 (186 hp), a crossover with a two-liter engine has all-wheel drive.
