In October 2021, Baldwin, during a rehearsal on the set of the western film Rust, fired a pistol that turned out to be loaded not with blanks, but with live ammunition. As a result, Ukrainian-born Hutchins died and director Joel Souza was seriously injured. The actor claimed that he did not pull the trigger of the gun, and the shot occurred spontaneously.

According to the special prosecutors, Baldwin was inattentive while training to fire a firearm, repeatedly pointed a revolver at crew members, fired a blank round at one crew member, and exhibited «erratic and aggressive behavior» on set.
Baldwin was initially charged with manslaughter of a cameraman, but prosecutors later dropped the charges, although they could be retried. In January, it became known that the actor had been charged again. According to Variety, if convicted, he faces up to 18 months in prison.
