BEIJING, June 20The Russian Museum will present masterpieces of the Russian avant-garde in China for the first time; the exhibition in the museum of Yangzhou, Jiangsu province will last from June 20 to September 20, after which the exhibition will be shown in the city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, and the city of Chengdu, Sichuan province, the Russian Embassy in China reports in its Telegram channel. .
«Today, June 20, the exhibition «Russian Avant-Garde» opens at the Yangzhou Museum. It will present about 60 works by the greatest masters of the movement — Kazimir Malevich, Marc Chagall, Pavel Filonov and Wassily Kandinsky — from the collection of the Russian Museum,» says in the statement.
It is noted that the works of each artist are accompanied by films about them.
«The exhibition also includes materials that will introduce viewers to the poetry and illustrations of Wassily Kandinsky and the works of Pavel Filonov, created for the poems of one of the founders of Russian futurism, Velimir Khlebnikov,» the embassy added .
Among other things, visitors to the exhibition will be able to see a film dedicated to the reconstruction of the opera buffe by the outstanding avant-garde composer Mikhail Matyushin “Victory over the Sun”. In 1913, Malevich worked on sketches of scenery and costumes for this production — it was here that the image of the “black square” first appeared. It meant a plastic expression of the victory of active human creativity over the passive form of nature — a black square appeared instead of a solar circle.
«In Yangzhou, the exhibition will be open until September 20, after which it will continue its journey through the largest cities of China. It will be seen by visitors to the Jiangnan Culture Museum in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province. At the end of 2024, masterpieces of the Russian avant-garde from the collection of the Russian Museum will be exhibited at the Tianfu Art Museum in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province,” the diplomatic mission reported.
The exhibition takes place as part of the cross years of culture between Russia and China.
