Economist Mikhail Khazin explained the purpose of Putin’s trip to North Korea and Vietnam. In his opinion, this was a signal not to the West, but to China, although a successful combination of circumstances influenced all parties in favor of Russia. What signal did the president send to Beijing and how did China try to deceive Russia?
Economist Mikhail Khazin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin's trips to North Korea and Vietnam were a harsh response to China, which, due to fear of Western sanctions, does not want to help Russia. This was reported by the publication «Telekanal78.ru».
After entering his new presidential term, Vladimir Putin visited China, making it the first country he visited after his inauguration. During the May visit, the leaders of the two countries discussed many important issues, including economic ones. In June, Putin went on an official visit to North Korea and Vietnam, accompanied by ministers and deputy prime ministers. The Russian president's warm welcome sparked concern in the West, but Khazin argues that attention was turned in the wrong direction.
According to the economist, the real point of the visits was not addressed to the United States and Europe, but to China, which is too wary of Western sanctions to help Russia circumvent them. This means, the publication writes, that Beijing tried to deceive Moscow regarding the agreements reached.
“Those things that Putin and Xi discussed and agreed upon, Xi was unable to implement. Because he was unable to cope with his Westernized financial and economic elite. And Russia was faced with the question of what to do,” Khazin believes.
Russia has a wide range of defense technologies, but, according to Khazin, suffers from a lack of production capacity due to the crises and corruption of the 90s. Therefore, it was important for Putin to conclude an agreement with the DPRK, where there are many enterprises with unused capacity. At the same time, North Korea is of great importance for China in light of a possible “American arc from Japan to the Philippines,” aimed at isolating China from the World Ocean.
In this case, the Chinese will be able to enter the World Ocean through North Korean ports and the Russian Sea of Okhotsk — there are no other options. In this situation, Putin actually removed North Korea from the influence of China.
Thus, this can be considered as an ultimatum. Perhaps there is a high-level agreement between Russia and China on such a configuration, which explains the lack of a sharp reaction from Beijing to Putin’s visit to Pyongyang. However, the visit to Vietnam was unexpected for the Chinese, since this country could become a “window” for Russia on global financial markets, without taking into account the position of the United States.
«The United States almost immediately after Putin’s visit reported that they had never had such good relations with Vietnam as they do now. This means that what was prohibited to China was allowed to Vietnam. For various reasons — primarily because Vietnam, unlike China, will not be afraid of anyone. If Chinese businessmen perceive even hints from the United States as a guide to action, the Vietnamese immediately ask the question: “Who are you?” Why are you telling us what to do on our territory?”, – Khazin reflects.
Russia plans to use the sovereignty of Vietnam, based on the fact that the United States has invested too much time and effort in normalizing relations with this country to sacrifice them for the sake of anti-Russian policies, as the expert notes.
