On Thursday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) published the list tennis players admitted to the Games in Paris. Among them were four athletes, about whom it had previously become known that they would not go to the Olympics. A Sport correspondent explains what's going on.
The IOC allowed eight Russian tennis players to compete at the Olympics in neutral status. These are Daniil Medvedev, Andrei Rublev, Karen Khachanov, Roman Safiullin for men, and for women — Daria Kasatkina, Lyudmila Samsonova, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Mirra Andreeva. It is easy to see that these are our best players according to the rating at the end of the French Open — that is, the moment of selection for the Games.
However, earlier Rublev's mother Marina Maryenko reported that her son would not perform at the Olympic Games. This was later confirmed by the Russian Tennis Federation (RFF): according to information from this organization, Medvedev, Safiullin, Pavel Kotov and Aslan Karatsev will go to Paris for the men, and Alexandrova, Andreeva, Veronika Kudermetova and Diana Schneider for the women.
So why then is the IOC now publishing in the lists of admission to the Olympics the names of the players who initially qualified for Paris, half of whom are not going to go to the Games? The fact is that expanded lists of Russian tennis players were sent in advance to the International Tennis Federation for approval. As the president of the FTR, Shamil Tarpishchev, reported, no complaints arose against anyone in terms of meeting the criteria of neutrality. Now the IOC has confirmed this by giving the go-ahead for the top-rated Russians to perform in Paris.
Well, what the federation previously informed the Russian fans — that is, the omission of the Olympic tournament by Rublev, Khachanov, Kasatkina and Samsonova — must be reported to the organizing committee by the players themselves individually. After all, formally the FTR currently cannot represent their interests. Thus, there is no sensation in the list published by the IOC on Thursday. The order of actions just has to be followed. And there is no reason to doubt that the previously announced FTR squad will go to the Games.
