MAKHACHKALA, July 19. A driver who hit police officers in Makhachkala has been charged with attempting to kill law enforcement officers, the press service of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for Dagestan reported.
“As part of the investigation of a previously initiated criminal case regarding the use of violence against police officers, a resident of the city of Makhachkala was charged under Article 317 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (attack on the life of a law enforcement officer),” the message says.
A criminal case was opened yesterday against the driver, a 38-year-old resident of Makhachkala, under Part 2 of Art. 318 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (use of violence against a government official in connection with the performance of his official duties, dangerous to life or health).

According to the investigation, on Thursday, at about 10 a.m. (Moscow time), in Makhachkala, on the roadway of Abubakarov Street, during operational and investigative activities, law enforcement officers stopped a car driven by the accused. Approaching the car, the police officers told him the reason for the stop and asked him to get out of the car. The driver ignored the officers' demands and «deliberately ran over them with the front of the car, after which he fled.» As a result, the police officers received «various bodily injuries.»
On Saturday, the court will consider the investigation's motion to choose a preventive measure for the accused in the form of detention. The Investigative Committee added that the article provides for a sentence of 12 to 20 years in prison.
