A device for rapid heart diagnostics has been created in Russia

MOSCOW, July 16. A prototype of a device for diagnosing heart failure and making a prognosis for its course was developed by specialists from the State Medical University named after. IN AND. Razumovsky. A small device that monitors key signs of the disease will reduce the burden on medical workers and reduce the waiting time for test results, the university press service reported.
Heart disease, according to WHO statistics, causes the death of about 10,000 people every day in European countries. Among these diseases is heart failure, in which the blood and tissues of the body are not saturated with the necessary amount of oxygen.
Timely detection of chronic heart failure syndrome, according to researchers from the Saratov State Medical University (SSMU) named after. IN AND. Razumovsky, allows you to prescribe adequate therapy already in the early stages of its development and, accordingly, reduce the socio-economic consequences associated with the progression and decompensation of cardiovascular diseases.

Today, many tests are used to diagnose heart failure. One of them is the so-called six-minute walk test, when a patient walks continuously for six minutes at a comfortable pace. Doctors evaluate the distance the patient has walked, his heart rate, the intensity of shortness of breath, and the level of blood oxygen saturation before, during, and after the test to determine the presence or absence of heart disease, the SSMU reported.

The university emphasized that, despite the apparent technical simplicity of this test, a fairly large amount of time is spent on instructing the patient, accompanying the testing and subsequent analysis of the information obtained by a medical professional.

"According to our estimates, six minutes for a patient turns into at least twenty for a doctor, which is a lot given the modern workload of an outpatient worker. This also affects the waiting time for results,” the press service quotes the words of Natalya Akimova, professor of the Department of Faculty Therapy of the Faculty of Medicine of the Saratov State Medical University.

To reduce the time it takes to decipher test results and, as a result, reduce the burden on medical staff and reduce the time spent by patients in queues at clinics, SSMU scientists are developing a multifunctional device to automate the six-minute walk test.

Thanks to the program developed at the university, the device will subsequently be able to conduct an initial analysis of the data obtained, as well as assess the dynamics of the patient’s condition after several tests, which will allow, if necessary, timely prescribing and adjusting basic therapy, experts emphasized.

< br />At present, a technical prototype of the device has already been developed. In addition, the primary software is ready to carry out several measurements at once. Research is being conducted to determine which parameters need to be added to the existing ones for the most complete description of the clinical picture without the intervention of a specialist.
“In particular, it is planned to add such characteristics as “work” and “power”, that is, the forces expended during the test by patients with different weights. Since a person’s build affects the amount of effort applied when moving, automatically taking into account weight in the data processing process will make diagnostics more effective,” said Akimova.

As the researchers said, after finalizing the software and the device itself, as well as obtaining the appropriate permits, it can be used in wide clinical practice. This will be implemented within the framework of a consortium created by SSMU. IN AND. Razumovsky under the «Priority 2030» program of the national project «Science and Universities».
