It was called «300 years of the Russian Academy of Sciences»
A new lava dome — an uplift in the form of viscous lava — was formed on the southwestern slope of the Shiveluch volcano.

It turns out that smaller lava domes «live» on a large volcano — They are formed as a result of squeezing viscous lava out of a volcanic channel. High viscosity prevents the lava flowing out of the crater from spreading, it creates a dome, which then slowly cools down at the site of the outflow.
There are four such domes on the southwestern slope of Shiveluch alone: Sherokhovataya, Krasnaya, Karan, and Sopochka. And on one of them, Karan, a new heated area formed at the end of last year.
As reported by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the location of a potential new vent was discovered using satellite monitoring data by employees of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Computing Center of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Planeta Research Center. This happened last year. And in April 2024, experts recorded a sharp increase in the temperature difference between the thermal anomaly and the background from 8 to 95 degrees Celsius. The day when this was recorded — April 26 — is considered the birthday of the new lava dome. It was named «300 years of the Russian Academy of Sciences» in honor of the anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences celebrated this year.
By the beginning of June 2024, its height reached 100 meters, and the size of the base was 800-500 meters.
