According to the results of a survey by the STONE analytical center, 38% of men and women in the capital are completely ready to give up their personal cars if public transport is as comfortable, fast and accessible as possible. Another 27% are “rather ready” to make such a decision.
“Since 2011, 114 metro and MCC stations have been built and reconstructed in the city, and four Moscow high-speed diameters have been launched. This has improved transport accessibility in different areas of the city and created additional jobs outside the center of the capital,” said Rafik Zagrutdinov, head of the Moscow City Construction Department.
Only 5% of respondents expressed complete commitment to their personal car. Another 9% said that they were “rather not ready” to switch to public transport. At the same time, women were more inclined to give up their personal car: 42% were ready to completely stop using it, and 30% were “rather ready” to do so. Among men, these shares were 35% and 25%, respectively.
In terms of age, the largest group of people inclined to give up cars was among the youth audience — 18-24 years old. With age, the willingness to completely switch to public transport decreases: among respondents over 55 years old, only 20% expressed a desire to give up their car.
The survey confirmed that the greatest influence on the decision is the location or absence of a metro station, MCC or MCD near the house. If there is a station within 5-10 minutes' walk, 40% are ready to give up the car, 38% within 10-15 minutes, 18% within 15-20 minutes, and only 10% within 20-25 minutes.
These statistics confirm the correctness of the «15-minute city» concept, which Moscow is implementing. It implies that every resident can find a job and receive all the necessary services within walking distance from their place of residence.
The most attractive thing for Muscovites in terms of transport was the presence of a station of the Koltsevaya or Big Circle Line of the metro near their home: with such proximity, 48% of respondents are ready not to use their car. The MCC and MCD have a positive effect on 28% of respondents giving up their car.
Survey results
«The results of our study confirm that Muscovites are increasingly thinking about switching to environmentally friendly modes of transport, choosing more mobile routes around the city and are ready to completely abandon cars in favor of the convenient metro and Moscow diameters. City transport allows city residents to be independent of traffic jams and plan their travel time more accurately. As a developer, we have confirmed the hypothesis that for new residential and office projects, the presence of a metro station and MCD within walking distance plays a much greater role than a location in the city center,» noted Kristina Nedrya, Director of the Commercial Department of STONE.
Improvement of the city's transport infrastructure has already had a positive effect on a number of respondents who have lived in Moscow for at least five years giving up cars. In recent years, 12% of respondents from this category have radically reduced the use of personal transport or completely abandoned it thanks to the opening of new BKL and MCD stations within walking distance from home.
350 people took part in the study. The analysis was conducted on the basis of a random sample balanced by gender, age and district of residence of respondents using an online survey.
