MOSCOW, August 16 Dutch Ajax and Greek Panathinaikos set a record for the number of shots in a penalty shootout at tournaments under the auspices of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
The regular time of the return leg of the third qualifying round of the Europa League, held in Amsterdam, ended with a score of 1:0 in favor of the guests. Taking into account the result of the first match, in which Ajax beat their opponent with the same score, the game went into extra time, which ended without goals scored. In the penalty shootout, the teams took 17 shots each, and Ajax won 13:12. The Amsterdam team's footballer Brian Brobbey failed to score twice.
Previously, the record for the number of shots in a penalty shootout at UEFA tournaments belonged to the 2007 European Under-21 Championship semi-final match between the Netherlands and England (1:1, 13:12 — on penalties), in which the teams took 16 shots each. The most productive series was 28 shots in the match of the first qualifying round of the 2023/24 Conference League, in which Maltese Gzira United beat Northern Irish Glentoran with a score of 14:13.
