MOSCOW, August 15 PSG head coach Luis Enrique, commenting on the competition between Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov and Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma, said that his team does not have first and second numbers.
PSG announced the transfer of the 25-year-old goalkeeper on June 14. Safonov signed a five-year contract. According to a number of media outlets, the transfer amounted to 20 million euros. In an interview with journalist Nobel Arustamyan, the Russian said that he had never lost the competition for a place in the starting lineup and had never sat on the bench.
At a press conference, the PSG coach was reminded of Safonov's words and asked whether Donnarumma is the team's main goalkeeper.
«I have never told anyone that he will be number one, number two or number three. It all comes down to competition and what I see in training. This applies to every goalkeeper. When a goalkeeper ends up at such a big club, he must be ready to play. They may not know when their turn will come, but that's football. I ask all the players to be ready for the challenge,» Enrique said at a press conference, a video of which was published on the PSG page on the X social network.
Safonov made his debut for PSG on August 7 in a friendly match against Austrian Sturm.
PSG will play their first match in the 2024/25 French Championship on August 16 away against Le Havre, for which Russian Daler Kuzyaev plays.
