Very heavy luxury: the first ever hybrid BMW M5 Touring is presented

The flagship «barn» from BMW M GmbH celebrated its world premiere at the Monterey Automobile Week (USA, California), its production and sales will begin in November of this year.

The seventh-generation BMW M5 sedan, codenamed G90, debuted in June of this year, and the public's attention was focused on its heaviness — visual and physical. The chopped body shapes in combination with the swollen sidewalls and bumpers, dotted with deep cutouts, create, to put it mildly, not the most elegant image, it is overloaded with details, and even the objectively large wheels (20-inch on the front axle, 21-inch on the rear) seem small in this body.

The physical weight of the new Emka turned out to be quite prohibitive, on the level of a large frame SUV (for example, the new Haval H9): the G90 sedan in running order weighs 2435 kg, the G91 station wagon — 2475 kg! The station wagon is heavier not only because of the larger stern, but also because of additional reinforcements in the rear of the body, designed to provide it with the necessary rigidity. Well, the main reason for the excess weight is the plug-in hybrid power plant, which appeared on the BMW M5 for the first time.

The design of the BMW M5 power plant is extremely conservative: a single electric motor (197 hp, 280 Nm) is integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission with a power take-off clutch for the front axle. The clutch can be forcibly released so that the car turns from all-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive and it is easier to drift, this entertainment is also facilitated by an active rear differential. The 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo gasoline engine located under the hood produces 585 hp and 750 Nm, the maximum combined output of the power plant is 727 hp. and 1000 Nm.

The capacity of the traction battery located in the floor of the body is 22.1 kW h, of which 18.6 kW h are available to the consumer, the maximum range on electric traction without turning on the internal combustion engine is 67 km according to the WLTP cycle. The BMW M5 Touring accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.6 s (0.1 s slower than the sedan). The maximum speed is 250 km/h, with the optional M Driver's Package — 305 km/h. When driving exclusively on electric traction, the maximum speed is limited to 140 km/h. The suspension of the new BMW M5 in both bodies is spring, with adaptive shock absorbers. The permissible mass of the towed trailer is 2 t, the permissible load on the roof is 100 kg. The fuel tank capacity is 60 l.

Meanwhile, BMW had much more elegant solutions when it came to hybrids: the BMW i8 coupe, discontinued in 2020, had two electric motors and an electric range of up to 55 km, and weighed only 1,535 kg, including because it did not have a bulky automatic transmission and carbon fiber was widely used in the body structure. Unfortunately, the BMW i8 was way ahead of its time and remains an underrated model, with BMW now offering hybrid behemoths like the new M5 Touring in its place.

By the way, due to the layout of the hybrid power plant, the trunk of the M5 Touring is smaller than the others station wagons of the current BMW “five”, but it is still quite roomy: 500 liters in the standard configuration and 1630 liters with the backrests of the rear sofa folded. From the driver's seat, the BMW M5 Touring is no different from the sedan — the same branded two-screen display, the same “color music” around the entire perimeter, the same touch panels that are inconvenient to use blindly and very impressive-looking front seats with integral headrests.

The minimum price for the BMW M5 Touring in Germany will be 146,000 euros, the sedan costs from 144,000 euros. For the station wagon, as for the sedan, a set of BMW M Performance parts is available, which allows you to slightly adjust the image of the car for the better.
