The Indian company Mahindra & Mahindra continues to expand the range of modifications of its frame SUV Thar: the premiere of the long-awaited five-door version of the Thar Roxx took place, and it differs from the «three-door» not only in its increased length and two additional doors.
The second-generation Mahindra Thar debuted in 2020 in a three-door body, externally it resembles the American Jeep Wrangler, which is why the international career of the Indian SUV has stalled, but in its homeland it is now selling well: from January to July 2024, 39,591 units were sold (+ 19.3% compared to the same period last year). At the beginning of last year, the Thar got a cheaper rear-wheel drive version (previously there was only all-wheel drive), and at the same time, a five-door was announced — yesterday, it was finally presented with the promise to start sales in October.

Why did it take so long to prepare the five-door version of the Thar? Because, as reported by the press service of Mahindra, a new M_Glyde platform was developed for the extended SUV with a heavily redesigned frame, new suspensions, improved ride comfort and reduced noise levels. The independent front suspension on double wishbones has revised kinematics, the attachment points of the upper arms have been significantly shifted upwards. The rear solid axle with Watt's stabilizing mechanism also received new levers and spaced springs and shock absorbers. All shock absorbers are amplitude-dependent and equipped with hydraulic bump stops. The front brakes are ventilated discs, the rear ones are drums for the simple versions and ventilated discs for the rich ones.

The overall length of the Mahindra Thar Roxx is 4428 mm, width — 1870 mm, height — 1923 mm, wheelbase — 2850 mm. For some reason, the ground clearance is not specified in the press release, the ford depth is 650 mm, the approach angle is 41.7 degrees, the departure angle is 36.1 degrees, the ramp angle is 23.9 degrees. The black roof only imitates the fabric, in fact, it is rigid in all modifications and is not removed, but can be equipped with a short or long transparent hatch depending on the configuration chosen by the buyer. The front end received a new radiator grille, reminiscent of clenched teeth, and the shape of the front bumper has been slightly changed compared to the three-door. The fuel tank capacity is 57 liters. Standard tire size is 255/65 R 18 or 255/60 R 19.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx has a five-seater interior and a 644-liter trunk. The front panel is generally the same as the three-door version, but a new, larger 10.25-inch multimedia screen is installed, and all trim levels except the base one also have a 10.25-inch electronic instrument cluster with colorful graphics. The basic package includes six airbags, ESC (stabilization system), all-LED optics, air conditioning, an audio system with four speakers, and other minimal amenities.
Thar Roxx “at maximum speed” has a full range of on-road and off-road electronic driver assistants, climate control, a powerful Harman Kardon audio system with nine speakers (including a subwoofer), leather trim, ventilated front seats, all-round cameras, a cooled glove compartment and other bells and whistles «.
There are two engines to choose from. The petrol 2.0-litre mStallion turbo engine produces 162 hp and 330 Nm in combination with a 6-speed manual transmission and 177 hp and 380 Nm in combination with a 6-speed Aisin hydromechanical automatic transmission, but the petrol versions only have rear-wheel drive.
The 2.2-litre mHawk turbodiesel produces 152 hp and 330 Nm in combination with a 6-speed manual transmission and 175 hp and 370 Nm in combination with a 6-speed Aisin hydromechanical automatic transmission. For diesel versions, both rear and all-wheel drive are available, with any gearbox.

All-wheel drive is part-time, with a rigidly connected «front» and a downshift in the transfer case. The differentials are free, but for the rear one, by default, an imitation of locking by brake mechanisms is provided (even for rear-wheel drive versions). The all-wheel drive versions with manual transmission have a forced electronic locking rear differential, and the all-wheel drive versions with automatic transmission have two exclusive electronic driver assistants for off-road driving — CrawlSmart (a «crawling» cruise control) and Intelliturn (allows you to reduce the turning radius in tight spaces).
The minimum price of the Mahindra Thar Roxx will be 1,299,000 rupees (1.39 million rubles at the current exchange rate). The top rear-wheel drive version with a diesel engine and automatic transmission will cost 2,049,000 rupees (2.19 million rubles), prices for all-wheel drive versions have not yet been announced.
