Late-night TV shows are expected to go off the air just after thousands of Hollywood writers go on strike on Tuesday.
More than 9,000 writers are set to walk out of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike ). first in 16 years. The picket will begin Tuesday afternoon.
Why is the Writers Guild of America on strike?
The writers disagree with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents major studios including Disney and Netflix.
They demand higher pay, a larger share of the profits generated by the streaming boom, and assurances that artificial intelligence will not be used in scripting.
The WGA lashed out at studios for creating a «giant economy» that turned writing into a «completely freelance» profession.
They called for a guaranteed minimum number of weeks of work per season, as well as a minimum television staffing of six to 12 writers on the show.
How did the Film & Television Producers Alliance react?
AMPTP said on Monday that they were willing to increase the compensation, but that «many other proposals are still under consideration that the Guild continues to push for.»
They rejected claims for artificial intelligence robots. ban, suggesting instead that they hold «annual meetings to discuss advances in technology.»During the last WGA strike, which began in 2007 and lasted 100 days, TV stations were forced to show reruns. Which TV shows will be affected?
Late-night talk show production, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live ! and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon will be stopped due to strikes.
Weekly shows such as Saturday Night Live, Live with Bill Maher, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver will be affected in the same way.
Next will be daily soap operas, as they are traditionally written shortly before filming.
Other drama series are also expected to be produced, including Abbott Elementary on ABC, NCIS on CBS and La Brea on NBC. be delayed.
How will this affect streaming services?
Netflix has said it will make up for this shortfall by adding shows to its service that are filmed elsewhere in the world.
Despite this, its American series could be affected if the strike will drag on.
HBO Max, which is changing its name to Max at the end of May, is hoarding programming for a rebranded release.

— DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm), May 2, 2023 What about films?
The flood of films into theaters is not going to be an instant hit because films take two to three years to produce and studios already have a range of films written and removed.
It will take a long strike to disrupt the release schedule of films.
What happens if the strikes drag on?
If a solution is not found, the strikes could delay the start of the fall TV season, when new shows and fresh seasons are normally aired.
Publication for the fall season usually starts in May or June.
If the strikes go on long enough, it's more likely to affect streaming services as well as movies.
What are people saying?< p>Set Meyers, host of Late Night, said he supported the strike during his show in Friday.
“I also feel very strongly that what the writers are asking for is not unreasonable,” Mr. Meyers said. its audience.
«As a proud member of the Guild, I'm very grateful that there is an organization that cares about the interests of writers.»
The One Saturday Night Live star told Deadline: «We too should think about our team. I absolutely support writers and want writers to get what they deserve and what they need, but I don't want our team to be left without work. We cannot create this art without each other.”
