Rishi Sunak confesses her love for Jilly Cooper's Bonkbuster books

The PM said he was a big fan of the Rutshire Chronicles series, which includes Polo

Rishi Sunak said he was «sincere fan» of Jilly Cooper's novels about sex and debauchery among the upper classes.

The Prime Minister revealed that reading the best-selling author's books is part of his escape from the rigors of his main job on Downing Street.

On Thursday, in an interview with ITV's This Morning show, he said it was «not clear how» his love for books came about, but now he's hooked. Mr. Sunak said he liked the series The Chronicles of Ruthshire, which includes Riders, Rivals, Polo and The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous.

He made this remark, when asked about what he regrets the most. He joked that his biggest regret right now is having to discuss his passion for spicy romance.

He added: “It is not clear to me how this happened. I am a true fan. She has written many different books, this is a set of books that I like. There should be escapism in your life, and that's good. You need to be able to escape from everyday life, whether it be books or TV.”

Ruthshire's chronicles focus on upper-class show jumping and polo, as well as their encounters with sex, adultery, scandal, and death. Its main recurring character, Rupert Campbell-Black, was partly inspired by Andrew Parker-Bowles, Queen Camilla's ex-husband.

Rivals, which was published in 1988, was adapted into a television series starring David. Tennant, Aidan Turner, Emily Atack and Danny Dyer.

Mr. Sunak has previously spoken about his tastes in television, revealing in a 2021 interview that he enjoys watching the Netflix series Emily in Paris. The show, which he binge-watched during lockdown, is about a young American marketer who moves to the French capital.

The prime minister was mildly teased by cabinet colleagues for his love of the program, according to The New York times. Spectator magazine.

He also revealed that he is a fan of another Netflix show, Bridgerton, a romantic series about upper-class families in Regency London.

Mr Sunak said, when he told the chancellor that «all my favorite books are fiction», but because of the harsh work, he had little time to read.
