Prisoners will be involved in building foundations for new prisons, in line with plans to break the cycle of reoffending, Attorney General said.

Alex Chalk said that having prisoners is «a certain justice». atone for their crimes by helping build cell blocks for future convicts.

The plans are part of a campaign to stop reoffending and boost the economy by equipping prisoners with the skills they need to get the job done. outside.

At HMP Fosse Way, a new category C prison in Leicestershire, offenders will learn how to drive construction equipment with a simulator, make eyeglasses at an optical lab and learn how to make music at a record company.

They will also contribute to the future construction of prisons by constructing concrete foundations and lighting equipment.

Prisoners — both high- and low-level criminals — will be paid between £12.50 and £15 a week if they choose. start working. They will be free to spend money on canteen, clothing and even some game consoles.

To help with their «educational journey», each of them will have a computer in their cell that can be used as a TV. which they can use to communicate directly with their family, listen to podcasts, and play games such as solitaire and Wordle.

They will also have access to a «virtual campus» for study purposes, but will not be able to go out to the Internet.

Technology will be monitored to ensure its proper use, while access to «earned privileges» may be revoked due to bad behavior.

Re-offending is a «much higher cost»

Chalking the cost to the taxpayer , the Attorney General pointed out that re-offending drains £18 billion from the public purse each year.

“We have to ensure that prisons are built in a safe, rigorous, but, yes, rehabilitative way, in order to fulfill the verdict of the court,” he told reporters on Thursday.

“There is a price to pay for this.” but it is a much higher price, and a much higher price is associated with re-offending or people going free or escaping the consequences of their actions.”

He said ministers want to use resources to “support society with the point of view of the other work that needs to be done.”

“For example, there are prisoners who are literally going to build concrete foundations for other prison blocks,” he said.

“We think there is some justice in this. Those people who have offended society should build the foundations of the guardianship.

“And yes, in the course of this they gain qualifications that they can use in the wild to go straight. But it means that society benefits.”

New 'Super Prisons'

HMP Fosse Way is the second of six new 'Super Prisons' that aim to revolutionize the penitentiary regime by putting rehabilitation, work and education at the forefront. heart.

The prison began accepting a small number of prisoners at the beginning of this year, with the goal of reaching full capacity by March next year. Most prisoners will spend no more than two years there.

While some licensed offenders have helped build a site in Leicestershire, this will be the first time convicts have been hired to produce components for future buildings in a special workshop.< /p>
