A confirmed tornado hit the ground around 7:00 pm local time, according to the Chicago National Weather Service.
“This tornado has hit the ground intermittently so far and is moving east. There are additional routes along the line south of O'Hara. Seek shelter if you are in the warning zone,” the report said.
By 8 p.m., the weather service said there were “currently no tornado warnings” in the Chicago forecast area. It said the storm was moving east towards southwest Michigan, and there were tornado watches in parts of Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio until Thursday morning.
Video from TV stations showed how hundreds of people take refuge in the shelters of the Bunny Party. About 173 flights departing from the airport were canceled and over 500 delayed, according to FlightAware's flight tracking service.
There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Kevin Bargnes, director of communications for O'Hare and Chicago Midway International Airport, told WGN-TV Wednesday night that there were no reports of damage at either airport.

Lynn Becker, a longtime Chicago resident, tweeted a video of tornado sirens roaring over the city's famous skyline.
“I live in a 60-story apartment building, so my options are somewhat limited,” he said. «I believe we need to penetrate the core of the building.»
Local news outlets reported that warehouses were damaged near O'Hara.
Weather Service cites an unidentified Emergency Manager Situations stated that a roof had been blown off in the Huntly area in McHenry County northwest of Chicago.
Huntley Battalion Commander Mike Pierce told ABC-7-TV that firefighters and other emergency services were responding to downed power lines, trees and tree limbs, and that there were reports of power outages. Damage to buildings appeared to be centered around two apartment buildings, he said.
More than 10,000 customers in the region lost power, according to poweroutage.us.

In Hodgkins, southwest of Chicago, police said hurricane damage and debris had been found in the northern part of the city near a shopping mall.
Earlier Wednesday, the Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center reported that the storm intensified. the risk of severe weather, including tornadoes in northern Illinois, including Chicago.
Brett Borchardt, senior meteorologist for the National Weather Service, confirmed to WGN-TV that several tornadoes have touched the Chicago area. He said the damage survey would likely take several days.
