The number of civil servants receiving a £100,000 salary has nearly doubled despite a wage freeze

In its report, the Taxpayers Alliance said: “The reason wages have increased so much more than allowances to wages, mainly due to inflation estimates. Growth in the top three ranks far exceeded growth in the lower levels.

The figures also show that the total number of Whitehall employees has increased by 101,440 since 2016. This is an increase of 24.2%. , which was the biggest increase in half a century, despite repeated promises to cut bureaucracy.

Working from home under fire

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister, has been urged by senior Conservative MPs to respond to the statistics by imposing an immediate recruitment freeze until numbers are brought back under control.

The Institute of Government think tank said that despite recent wage increases, wage cuts since 2010 mean that wages have fallen in real terms.

It was calculated earlier this year that Whitehall's salary is 12% lower at junior levels and 23% lower at senior positions than if they kept up with inflation.

A cabinet spokesman said: «As expected, during temporary and exceptional events such as the pandemic, the number of staff helping to fight Covid, including the world's leading vaccination program, is increasing.

«We are committed to efficiency and have generated nearly £8 billion in savings over the past two financial years.”
