The Avtotor Kaliningrad plant has been preparing for the serial production of the Chinese cross-country BAIC X55 since the beginning of June, but now the start of industrial assembly has been announced. As noted in the press service of the company, even at the preparation stage, “work was carried out on the development and implementation of operating cards, in accordance with the technological process, special equipment was designed and manufactured, and personnel involved in production were trained.” In addition, additional equipment was installed on the conveyor line «for the initial programming of control units and all electronic systems of the car», because the SUV has «a large number of electronic systems» and «intelligent assistants of the latest generation.» Well, let us remind you that within the framework of cooperation with the BAIC concern, the Russian company also assembles BAIC U5 Plus sedans, BAIC X35 crossovers and BAIC BJ40 frame SUVs.

At home, this SUV debuted last year, where it is known as the Beijing X6 or Mofang (aka «Rubik's Cube» in Chinese). But in the Russian Federation, it was decided to sell the cross under the export index X55 (in some countries, the SUV still has the Plus prefix). Appearance features — two-tier head optics (stripes of running lights are located on top, main headlight blocks go below), retractable door handles and taillights made in the form of a single die. By the way, in China, for a surcharge, cameras are announced for a crossover instead of traditional exterior mirrors, but so far this is just a way to draw attention to the model, because in China such a chip has not yet been legally allowed. Here in Russia, the five-door has ordinary mirrors.

In terms of dimensions, the BAIC X55 is close to our deceased Toyota RAV4. The length of the «Chinese» is 4620 mm, width — 1886 mm, height — 1680 mm, wheelbase — 2735 mm. The declared trunk volume of the version for Russia is 350 liters.
Inside, there are separate instrument screens and multimedia systems, plus a “floating” central tunnel with a niche at the bottom. The list of equipment for the SUV intended for the Russian Federation also includes a cooled box in the armrest between the front seats, a panoramic roof, six airbags, all-round cameras, a parking assistant, an electric tailgate (with memory and a contactless opening function), dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise -control, lane marking and blind spot monitoring systems.
As in China, in Russia, the BAIC X55 will be offered with a non-alternative petrol turbo four 1.5 with a capacity of 188 hp, which is combined only with a seven-speed robotic gearbox with two clutches. The drive is exclusively front. According to Avtotor, the crossover will pick up the first «hundred» in 7.8 seconds.

Russian sales will start before the end of this year, prices have not yet been announced. However, it is already clear that the X55 will be more expensive than the X35 model. The last cross we have today is presented with aspirated 1.5 (112 hp) and 5MKP or a turbo engine of the same volume (136 hp), which is combined with a CVT. The junior SUV BAIC X35 at the price today costs from 1,839,000 to 2,319,000 rubles.
