Sky Sports apologize to Everton for mocking Sean Dyche tribute to deceased stadium worker

Sky Sports apologized for commentators' «insensitive and deplorable» jokes about Sean Dyche's black armband during Everton's loss to Aston Villa.

Dyche and the players paid tribute to Michael Jones, the 26-year-old player who was killed while working on the construction of a new stadium at Bramley Moor Dock.

However, Bill Leslie and one of the commentators Andy Hinchcliffe drew ire viewers, comparing Dyche to a «dealer» because of his white shirt and black headband.

«The comments made during the Aston Villa-Everton game were insensitive and deplorable,» a Sky spokesman said in response. “We spoke to everyone involved in the coverage, including commentators, and reminded them of their responsibility, as well as the need for caution and sensitivity. We apologize for any upset or concern caused by these comments.»

Jones, 26, from Kirkby, died in an accident at a construction site last week. The rest of Sky's coverage of Sunday's match was delicate, with cameras showing tributes to fans at the 26th minute. Sources said both Leslie and Hinchcliffe expressed regret over their comments.

Everton have announced in recent days that the club is working with Mr Jones' family on a «suitable and lasting tribute». «The loss of Michael Jones, a lifelong Everton player who followed the Blues home and away, left us all devastated,» the club said.

«Thoughts from everyone at Everton» stay with Michael's family, friends and colleagues. We will now work with Michael's family on a worthy and enduring tribute. Michael Jones will forever be in our hearts.”

His family said their “beloved son, brother and uncle” would be “beyond words”. The statement added: “He has been a Blues player all his life and was so happy to be working at the new stadium. We want to thank the NHS staff and colleagues who went above and beyond for Michael.”
