Mr. Penn and the film crew witnessed the beginning of Vladimir Putin's invasion firsthand after they decided to make a documentary about the Ukrainian actor-turned-politician.
In the trailer, Mr. Zelenskiy speaks to a filmmaker in his bunker shortly after airstrikes began on Kiev, the country's capital.
«We are just ordinary people who want to live in their own country,» he said .

In the film, Penn made seven trips to Ukraine in two years, the first of which preceded the invasion just a few weeks.
«We decided to tell a light-hearted story about this comedian who was elected president of Ukraine, but instead witnessed a historical leader and his country's war for freedom,» he said.
«When you enter the country of such an incredible unity, you know, what we all [in the United States] lack.”
In a later interview, Zelensky said, “We need Americans to understand the price we have to pay for freedom.”
