For the third time in his England career, Ollie Watkins found the back of the net to give the hosts a narrow victory at Wembley. However, the performance was far from stellar and with Italy taking part in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday, it was not a night that would have given the team much confidence.
So who put their hand up for the starting spot against the Italians and who had a night to forget? Mike McGrathmanaged Gareth Southgate's team.
England (4-2-3-1)Sam Johnston
First appearance in two years. Great save to keep out a deflected shot from Baccus that was headed into the top corner and then into the near post for Goodwin to strike. 7/10
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Without the ball he was at right-back, but in possession he played as an inverted full-back in midfield. and tried to choose passes. 6/10
Fikayo Tomori
Duke lost it in the first half and should have scored with a lucky volley. He made no mistakes, although England as a whole looked shaky at times. 6/10
Lewis Dunk
Saved goal, cleared the ball off the line and denied Strane, causing the Brighton defender to drop back into perfect position and Johnston to be beaten. 7/10

Got into a pushing match with Baccus and got a yellow card. Looks comfortable at left-back, where he plays for Chelsea, and could be a useful substitute. RESERVED. 6/10
Conor Gallagher
Threw into a tackle which could have resulted in him being sent off or injured. One of the tests earned him a yellow award. Lots of energy in the center of the field. RESERVED. 5/10
Jordan Henderson
When he was replaced, part of the crowd booed. The heavy rain was very different from the conditions in Saudi Arabia. The ball kept moving but could have been more positive. 5/10

Good work in the first half as he sent Gallagher out. There was also a header over the crossbar. It was his first match in over a year and gives Southgate the opportunity to play on the wings. 6/10
James Maddison
Guilty of a spectacular shot when it was headed for a throw-in, but he could have blamed it on the ball. A pass to Watkins in the first half created a good chance. 6/10
Jack Grealish
Given the assist, the shot flew wide of the goal. Continued to outrun his opponents in difficult conditions, returning to full fitness. 6/10
Ollie Watkins
Goals in consecutive England matches 563 days apart. He tapped from a yard away, insisting Grealish had succeeded. Earlier I hit the post and got hit in the head in the first minute. BEST MATCH 7/10
