Alex Hartley, a former England spin coach, is to be appointed specialist bowling coach for Pakistan Super League side Multan Sultans — a role that could include working with Adil Rashid .
Hartley, a 2017 World Cup winner, will become one of the first women to coach in the professional men's game. Leg-spinner Rashid, who is currently playing in the ODI World Cup in India, represented Multan in the last edition of the PSL and will work with Hartley if he is retained by the franchise. Player retention for the 2024 season has not yet been confirmed.
Multan is also set to appoint Catherine Dalton, who had a short international career with Ireland, as fast bowling coach. Hartley's official position is assistant bowling coach. She will work alongside a head bowling coach, whose name has not yet been announced.

Sarah Taylor, a former England women's international, was appointed wicket coach at Sussex in 2021 and has since worked for several other men's teams, including Southern Brave in the Hundred. Taylor is believed to be the first female coach in a professional men's sport.
The appointments follow a growing trend of female coaches beginning to gain opportunities in men's sports. In July, Hannah Dingley had a brief stint as interim manager of Forest Green, becoming the first woman to manage a professional English Football League club.
Ali Tareen, managing director of Multan Sultans, said he hopes these appointments will accelerate gender equality in sports. The Sultans appointed Hijab Zahid as their general manager in August.

Hartley, 30, retired from playing professionally in August. She represented England in 28 ODIs and four T20Is between 2016 and 2019, and also took two crucial wickets to help England defeat India in the 2017 World Cup final at Lord's.

The next PSL is scheduled to begin in mid-February. The Sultans won the 2021 title and finished second in both 2022 and this year.
