Xpeng presented a modular airmobile based on a three-axle hybrid minivan

The young Chinese company Xpeng held the Xpeng Tech Day 2023 event, where it introduced the public to its latest technological achievements. The focus, as always, was on air cars.

Xpeng considers one of the most successful electric vehicle startups; last summer, the Volkswagen concern bought a stake in it to obtain the Xpeng platform for its electric vehicles. But Xpeng is not only about electric cars; the Chinese startup follows in the footsteps of the American company Tesla and works at the forefront of science and technology in several areas related to the automotive industry. Once a year, Xpeng holds a presentation to highlight its progress.

At the Xpeng Tech Day 2023 event, the company showed the X9 electric minivan live, but without technical details yet, so we will return to it later when the details appear. Here, Xpeng announced the transition to a qualitatively new level in the operation of the autopilot — in fact, the Xpeng autopilot in terms of functionality is not much inferior to the Tesla FSD autopilot, but it also has the same problems — the operation of the autopilot is limited by law, it is still not legalized in China autopilots are above the second level according to the SAE classification, that is, the driver cannot be distracted from the road.

Xpeng also now has its own generative artificial intelligence (analogous to ChatGPT), which takes the work of the voice assistant in Xpeng electric vehicles to a whole new level. AI is also an important part of the humanoid robot Xpeng — this is a direct analogue of Tesla Optimus, that is, a future human assistant in everyday life and at work.

In turn, the subsidiary airmobile company Xpeng AeroHT showed two new products at once. One of them is a new version of the integrated vertical take-off vehicle (eVTOL flying car), which Xpeng has been working on for several years, changing its layout and style. The latest version has returned to a supercar-style design, and four retractable pillars with two screws on each are again packed inside the body and move out of it at the request of the driver-pilot. It turns out that in the automotive form, nothing gives the Xpeng eVTOL the ability to fly, except perhaps for its too large overall length.

Xpeng will continue to practice with the design of its integrated aeromobile, but at the same time honestly admits that in the foreseeable future it will not be possible to bring it to mass production — again, legal restrictions interfere.

As an alternative to an integrated aeromobile, Xpeng now offers a modular aerocar, in which the driving and flying parts are physically separated: in, let's say, the parked state, the Xpeng AeroHT modular flying car is a large three-axle minivan, equipped with a plug-in hybrid power plant, where a compact internal combustion engine is used as a generator and electric range extender. The minivan is designed for five passengers, while approximately half of the body is occupied by a flying module — a two-seater capsule on legs with six retractable propellers on stands. The central drains are additionally equipped with small thruster rotors in cylindrical housings. In case of an accident, the flying module is equipped with automatically firing parachutes; they are capable of providing a more or less soft landing when falling from a height of 50 m.

Modular airmobile is easier to manufacture and operate, more flexible and versatile, great for wilderness adventurers and rescuers. The internal combustion engine, combined with a large supply of fuel on board, will be able to charge the batteries of the driving and flying modules several times in any wilderness. The modular airmobile will go into production before the integrated one, but again, it is unknown when. The technical characteristics of both aeromobiles have not been announced — this makes no sense, their design will probably change more than once. Xpeng AeroHT modular flying car
