Angela Rayner is under investigation on numerous charges, the chief constable said. implied by Greater Manchester Police.
Stephen Watson said there were a «number of allegations» and police would «get to the bottom» of them.
Ms Rayner, deputy leader of the Labor Party, was accused of incorrectly listing her permanent address on the electoral roll, an offence.
Questions have been raised about whether she had to pay thousands of pounds in capital gains tax on the sale of her former council home.
Officers are looking into her tax arrangements since then in light of allegations she did not live at the house, The Times reported. A police source told the newspaper that the investigation was «well resourced», involved at least a dozen detectives, and that officers were dealing with more than «one issue».
Ms Rayner has repeatedly denied any offenses. calling claims against her a “torrent of smears” from the Tories. She said she had received expert advice which she would provide to police and HM Revenue and Customs but was resisting calls to publish it.
«I've said all along that I would welcome the opportunity to speak to the police and HMRC because I haven't done anything wrong,» she told LBC radio on Tuesday.
Ms Rayner bought her former council house in Vicarage Road, Stockport, in 2007 for a reduced price of £79,000 under a right to buy scheme.
She claimed the property as her main residence on the electoral roll until she sold it for a profit of £48,500 in 2015, but faces questions over whether she moved into her ex-husband's Lowndes Lane address , a mile away, after the couple got married. in 2010.
Neighbors denied her claims and said her brother lived in Vicarage Road, calling Ms Rayner his «landlord».
Greater Manchester Police, which initially decided not to pursue the allegations, launched an investigation last week after James Daly, the Conservative MP, alerted officers to their statements.
Mr Watson told BBC Radio Manchester on Tuesday : “There are a number of statements. Based on our initial assessment, we have concluded that it is unlikely that we will pursue an investigation following the provision of further investigation or additional information.
“We have reconsidered this decision and announced that we will launch a formal investigation. This is a neutral action — it does not mean that the information gives us any hard evidence on which to base anything at this stage.
“We just have an accusation. We are going to get to the bottom of what happened and decide where we go from here.»
Nadine Dorries, the former culture secretary, expressed concern about the «influence» Andy Burnham said could cause alleged «conflict of interest», calling on Greater Manchester Police to «hand this over to other forces immediately».
Mr Burnham, the Labor mayor of Greater Manchester, who effectively has the power to hire and fire the chief constable, is said to be a personal friend of Ms Rayner.
In a statement, the security forces said that he would not participate in the investigation, emphasizing that they have operational independence. He insisted that neither he nor Kate Green, his deputy to whom he delegated his police duties, would have «any involvement.»
Ms Dorries, who resigned as MP last August, wrote in the Daily Mail: “One of the powers What a regional mayor like Burnham has is the ability to hire and fire the chief constable and control the police budget. How can this fact not affect GMP? Burnham and Green don't have to do or say anything for their impact to be felt.»
Ms Rayner was defended by Nick Bowles, the former Tory minister who defected to begin advising Sir Keir Starmer earlier this year. .
In a letter to The Times, he called the attacks on her “one of the most grotesque spectacles of hypocrisy I have ever witnessed” and said he would “wipe the floor” with the Conservatives.
>Anneliese Dodds, chair of the Labor Party, also defended Ms Rayner over claims she lied about her primary residence, arguing that couples living apart were «a reality of modern Britain».
A spokeswoman for Ms. Rayner said she had lied about her primary residence. on Friday: “Angela always made it clear that she also spent time at her husband's house when they had children and got married, just as he spent time at her house. The house she owned remained her primary home.
“Angela looks forward to meeting with the relevant authorities, including the police and HMRC, to set out the facts and draw a line on this matter.”
