Yvette Cooper refuses to give a figure for Labour's net migration target

Yvette Cooper was asked at least five times to give the figure but refused to do so. -html.eip.telegraph.co.uk/bc72b371-0215-4d99-b27b-4223678de837.html?direct=true&id=bc72b371-0215-4d99-b27b-4223678de837&template=articleRendererHTML» class=»tmg-particle Sticky-Nav WRP- bc72b371-0215-4d99-b27b-4223678de837″ title=»General Election» data-business-type=»editorial» loading=»eager» scroll=»no» Frameborder=»0″ allow=»web-share» style=» width: 100%; min-width: 100%; display: block: 0px;»>

Yvette Cooper refused to specify a number. how much will Labor reduce net migration, despite saying it «must fall».

The shadow home secretary has been asked at least five times to name the figure by which her party would cut migration, but Ms Cooper has refused to say.

It comes after Sir Keir Starmer unveiled new plans for the cap at the weekend net migration and promised: “Read my lips — I will reduce the number of immigrants.”

Ms Cooper told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg: «We're not setting ourselves a target and the reason for that is partly, frankly, every time the Conservatives have done this, frankly, they've just ended up all over the place, destroying and discrediting the whole system.»

She also said she would not set targets because there were “changes” in migration rates from year to year, citing the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

To a repeated question on the figures, the shadow home secretary added: “I understand the question and I know that you are effectively trying to suggest that I set a target or a broad target, but I am not going to do that. We want to be clear: net migration must decline.”

“Read my lips”

Sir Keir has unveiled new proposals to reduce the number of migrants, including a promise to ban «bad bosses» who break labor laws by, for example, not paying staff the minimum wage when hiring workers from overseas.

He also promised to force employment sectors applying for visas for foreign workers to first train Britons to do the work.

Sir Keir told The Sun on Sunday: “Read my lips — I will cut immigration.”

>

“If you trust me with the keys to No. 10, I will make you this promise: I will control our borders and will ensure that British businesses are helped to employ British people first.”

“This is a changed Labor Party, back to serving working people. This means that we need to not just talk about sky-high migration, but act in accordance with it.”

Net migration last year was 685,000, the second highest on record.

The shadow home secretary also refused to rule out sending asylum seekers to another country to have their claims processed, saying Labor would «see what works».

The party has repeatedly said it would scrap the Tories' Rwanda scheme if they took office, and Ms Cooper said the party's plan to create a new border security command would be the «first priority».

But Mr. Ms Cooper told Kuenssberg: “Your question was whether there might be other arrangements in the future and so on.”

“Keir always said we'd see what works, and there are different kinds… I think that there are offshore processing mechanisms and things that have already been used at various times in the past.

“For example, the Dublin Agreement did mean that under the scheme some people were returned to France, Germany or other countries to have their claims processed there.”

Migrant Magnet

Pre-Brexit returns In relation to migrants EU countries were governed by the Dublin Agreement, under which migrants could be sent back to a safe third country through which they had passed before arriving at their destination.

Asked again whether Labor would send asylum seekers to another country to have their claims processed, Ms Cooper said: “That's what happened before under the Dublin scheme and we'll see what works.”

< p >The Conservatives have repeatedly accused Labor and Sir Keir of not being tough enough on migration, and on Sunday said Sir Keir was saying “what he thinks people want to hear”.

James Cleverley, the Home Secretary, responded to Labour's proposals on migration by saying: «This is another day of Starmer saying what he thinks people want to hear at the election because he lacks the conviction to say it.» what he believes in.»

“A Labor government will allow open immigration, making the UK a magnet for illegal migrants.”

“Only Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives are determined to reduce migration and stop shipping. We have a track record of taking bold action to reduce migration to secure the UK's future.»
