SNP Manifesto 2024: What will the party's election promises be?

The Scottish National Party will hold its first national election on July 4 since Nicola Sturgeon stepped down as leader of the Scottish National Party last March.

Scottish Nationalists won 48 seats in Scotland's Westminster in the 2019 election, but polls show that they are participating in elections. Of course, at least half will lose the general election, thanks to a combination of a resurgent Labor Party, the unpopularity of the Scottish government and a series of scandals, including a lengthy police investigation into the party's finances.

John Swinney, who succeeds the failed Humza Yousaf as SNP leader and First Minister, is expected to help steady the ship and papers by bridging some of the party's yawning divisions. Worst predictions that the Scottish National Party would win just 15 seats may now not come true.

However, Mr Swinney was unsuccessful in his first stint as leader of the Scottish National Party (between 2000 and 2004), when he was ousted after overseeing two poor election results. Although he is now a more experienced politician, he lacks the popularity of Ms Sturgeon.

Many of the policy areas that will be debated at the election, such as education and health, are devolved to the Scottish government at Holyrood. However, they are likely to be debated during the general election campaign.

Here's what the Scottish National Party could include in its 2024 election manifesto:

  • Independence
  • Taxes and spending
  • >

  • Economy
  • Health and social care
  • Defense and foreign affairs
  • Brexit
  • < li>Immigration

  • Energy
  • Environment

Independence

  • Demand negotiations with the UK government for another referendum
  • < li>Proposal to include the Independence Party logo on the ballot papers

Before leaving his post as First Minister, Humza Yousaf promised that the first line of the manifesto page would read: “Vote for Scotland so that it became an independent country.»

Following a series of policies that were introduced and quickly reversed, the Scottish National Party (SNP) has adopted a plan to demand negotiations with the UK government to hold another independence referendum if the party wins a majority of the 57 seats that will be contested in Scotland after the border changes.

It is unlikely that Rishi Sunak or Sir Keir Starmer will agree to such a demand after the election. However, support for independence in the polls is much higher than support for the Scottish National Party.

The SNP hopes the pledge will win back some independence supporters who have left the party in recent months and encourage them to turn out on election day.

The party has even proposed displaying new logos saying «SNP Independence» or «SNP for Independence» » on the general election ballot.

Tax and spending

  • National Insurance tax and inheritance tax devolved
  • Wealth tax of £12 billion
  • Increase spending on affordable housing.
  • Cap prices in supermarkets.
  • Reintroduce tax relief on mortgage interest.

Scotland has already made Scotland the highest taxed part of the UK through control of bands and rates income tax. There will be six income tax bands in Scotland in 2024/25, compared to three south of the border.

Shona Robison, the SNP Chancellor of the Exchequer, made clear her disagreement with the Chancellor's decision to cut personal taxes in his Autumn and Spring Budgets, arguing that the funding should have been spent on public services instead.

To avoid another «devastating decade» » austerity, the Scottish National Party will advocate for both Labor and the Tories to abandon their budget rules and focus on spending.

Previously, the Scottish National Party advocated complete financial autonomy — Scotland controls all taxes in the north. borders as a stepping stone to independence.

The manifesto could propose devolution of taxes such as National Insurance and Inheritance Tax, with the aim of raising rates for wealthier Scots.

As well as ending non-resident tax status, the SNP has called on the UK government to increase capital gains tax, tax on share buybacks and increase taxes on those earning more than £100,000. .

Nationalists have also proposed a £12 billion wealth tax, although there are few details on how it would be calculated and levied.
