The row over Ms Rayner's home, following allegations of an unauthorized biography of Lord Ashcroft, a former Conservative peer, centered on allegations that her brother Darren Bowen lived in the house she owned in Vicarage Road, Stockport, Greater Manchester.
Neighbors claimed she lived with her then-husband at his home in nearby Lowndes Lane. However, she was recorded on the electoral register as living at Vicarage Road.
Ms Rayner has always maintained that she resides at the house in Vicarage Road and that this is her main place of residence. If she did live with her husband, she would have to pay capital gains tax of around £2,500 on the sale of her own house.
She sold her house in March 2015 for £127,500. , making a profit of £48,500. Because it was designated as her principal residence, the gains were not subject to capital gains tax. Under tax law, married couples who are both individual property owners can only have one main residence.
Stockport Council also issued a statement last month saying it would not be pursuing any further action against Ms Rayner.< /p>
