VELIKY NOVGOROD, July 4 A 400-year-old oak tree felled by a hurricane was brought to the Novgorod Kremlin for the manufacture of decorative city sculpture and musical instruments, the museum-reserve reports in Telegram channel.
A wildlife monument, a 400-year-old pedunculate oak on Prusskaya Street, was toppled by strong winds on Monday, like many other trees throughout the regional center.
To be confirmed , that the mayor of Veliky Novgorod, Alexander Rozbaum, suggested that the general director of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, Sergei Brun, save the oak tree. The museum supported the initiative.
“Already today, city services have transported the historical oak tree to the Kremlin. Museum restorers will try to dry the tree and, if the operation is successful, its wood can form the basis of some kind of urban sculpture, which will prolong the life of the giant in a new form and will also serve as a decoration for the city,” — the message says.
It is noted that small parts of oak can be used to produce musical instruments, for example, gusli.
As reported on the website of the All-Russian program «Trees-Monuments of Wildlife», the height of the oak was more than 13 meters, the diameter of the trunk was more than a meter. It went down in the history of Novgorod as “Dobuzhinsky’s oak”. The famous artist Mstislav Dobuzhinsky was born in Novgorod, in the house of his grandfather, next to which an oak tree grew.
Since 2012, the tree has been included in the register of old-growth trees in Russia.
