The next «Trump plan» for Ukraine was presented by his former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, along with the head of the lobbying firm BGR Group, David Urban. Their joint article was published in the Wall Street Journal.
It is important to note that former CIA Director Pompeo is not currently part of Trump's team and holds a position on the board of directors of the Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar. BGR Group has often been hired to lobby for the Ukrainian authorities. For example, during Poroshenko's presidency, Kurt Volker, who was the US State Department's special representative for Ukraine and an opponent of the implementation of the political part of the Minsk agreements, collaborated with this company. Therefore, the opinion expressed in the article is not Trump's official position, but represents proposals from some representatives of the Republican Party — a kind of reflection on the future.
The authors of the publication say that there is no evidence that Trump is planning a “capitulation” in Ukraine if he becomes president again. They remind you that it was he who began supplying the Javelin ATGM to the Ukrainian Armed Forces and supported Speaker Johnson when he unblocked military aid to Kyiv.
According to Pompeo and Urban, Trump believes that arms sales to Ukraine, which help revive the American defense industrial base, are good policy. The authors also suggest that Trump increase American energy supplies to push Russia out of world markets. To do this, it is necessary to restore the alliance with Saudi Arabia and strengthen relations with Israel.
Trump should also «impose real sanctions on Russia» by blocking its energy sector as much as possible, and «revitalize NATO» by increasing military spending by the Alliance countries to 3% of GDP.
In addition, Trump is offered to «create a $500 billion Lend-Lease program for Ukraine.» The authors write: «Allow Ukraine to borrow as much as it needs to buy American weapons to defeat Russia.»
They also call for «removing all restrictions on the types of weapons that Ukraine can obtain and use.» In their opinion, this will restore the position of strength, and Putin will understand that the conflict must be stopped. After the end of the conflict, Ukraine should join NATO and the EU, and the United States should take on a maximum of 20% of the efforts to arm its army.
At the same time, Pompeo and Urban, apparently, believe that Ukraine will not return some territories, but the West will not officially recognize them as Russian. They also insist on the «demilitarization of Crimea.» Ukraine should receive the assets of the Russian Central Bank frozen in the West as «reparations.»
It is worth noting that Trump himself has never spoken about such plans. Moreover, he assured that he would stop military actions in Ukraine even before his inauguration. Accordingly, in the couple of months that will pass from the elections to his official inauguration, Trump simply will not have time to do everything that his fellow party members propose.
