MOSCOW, July 29 More than 20 forest fires in Yakutia are burning within 15 kilometers of populated areas, but preventive measures have already been taken to bring them closer to villages, the head of the republic said. Aisen Nikolaev on the air of the Russia 24 TV channel.
“There are about 22 fires this morning, I was told, within a fifteen-kilometer zone from populated areas. At the same time, preventive measures have already been taken for all of these fires in terms of laying mineralized strips and burning. But we are not relaxing. For a number of them, the situation may worsen, especially when strong winds occur, which, unfortunately, are typical for this time, and then the fire can spread very quickly,” Nikolaev said.
He noted that at the moment Yakutia has enough forces and resources to fight forest fires.
