The youngest pickup truck in Ford's North American model line has undergone a comprehensive update and is ready to set new sales records — it has no equal in its class on the domestic market yet.
The compact by American standards Ford Maverick pickup truck debuted in 2021, it is based on the C2 passenger platform from the latest generation European Focus, with a load-bearing body accordingly. The lack of a frame did not promise Maverick great success — in the US, such pickups are usually not popular, but reality exceeded the wildest expectations of Ford marketers: in 2022, Maverick was sold in the US in the amount of 74,370 units, in 2023, 94,058 units were sold, in the first half of the current year — 77,113 units, which is 81.4% more than sales in January-June 2023.

The Maverick's success is explained by a successful combination of attractive design, practicality and a relatively affordable price. Ford assures that 60% of Maverick buyers previously owned vehicles from other brands, but at the same time, it is obvious that it has taken away some buyers from the slightly larger and much more expensive Ford Ranger frame pickup — its sales in the first half of 2024 fell by 37.1% to 15,175 units.
Even taking into account that Ford has methodically rewritten the price list for the Maverick upwards, this pickup truck still remains the most affordable in the US: the pre-restyling Maverick now costs in the US from $23,920, the updated one will cost from $26,295 plus $1,595 for delivery. For comparison, the Maverick's main competitor, the compact Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup truck with a monocoque body, currently costs from $26,900 in the US, while the Ford Ranger costs from $32,720.

When preparing the Maverick update, Ford took into account the main wishes of buyers of this model: it turns out that half of them tow trailers with this pickup and want the Maverick towing capabilities to be better. For the all-wheel drive pickup, an optional 4K Tow Package was initially offered, doubling the permissible towing weight of the trailer — from 907 to 1814 kg, but now it is supplemented by electronic assistants Pro Trailer Hitch Assist (with the help of a rear view camera and parking sensors, it helps to easily and correctly drive up to the trailer the first time to hook it) and Pro Trailer Backup Assist (facilitates maneuvering with a trailer when reversing). There are also all-round cameras, they allow you not to hit anything when driving on narrow streets or in a warehouse.

On the outside, the Maverick received a new front end design with heavily trimmed, squiggle-shaped headlights, the front bumper acquired curly burrs along the edges of the unpainted black section, and the radiator grille design is now unique for each trim level — there are four of them: XL, XLT, Lariat and Tremor. The Lariat trim level has a new 19-inch wheel design.

During the restyling, the pickup's interior received a new digital instrument cluster with an 8-inch screen and a larger multimedia screen with a diagonal of 13.2 inches (before the restyling it was 8 inches). The multimedia screen has absorbed all the climate settings — there are no more physical controls. Smartphone interfaces Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now supported wirelessly. The palette of finishing materials has been updated and expanded. The standard equipment includes a rich set of electronic driver assistants Ford Co-Pilot360, helping to avoid emergency situations. The Lariat and Tremor trim levels are supplemented with adaptive cruise control with a traffic jam mode.
The Maverick still has two power plants. The junior hybrid power plant is now offered not only with front-wheel drive, but also with all-wheel drive (the clutch takes power to the rear wheels), and the 4K Tow Package option is also available for it. The hybrid power plant consists of a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine (164 hp, 210 Nm) operating on the Atkinson cycle, an electric motor with permanent magnets (128 hp, 235 Nm), an electromechanical variator and a buffer battery (its capacity is not specified, charging from an external source is not provided). The maximum total power of the hybrid power plant is 194 hp. The front-wheel drive pickup has a semi-independent rear suspension with a transverse torsion beam, while the all-wheel drive has an independent multi-link suspension.

The second power plant is a 2.0-liter gasoline «turbo four» EcoBoost paired with an 8-speed hydromechanical «automatic». The maximum output of the EcoBoost engine with the update for some reason decreased from 253 hp and 375 Nm to 241 hp and 373 Nm, but in combination with this engine now only all-wheel drive is available, although previously it was possible to choose front-wheel drive. The off-road version of the Tremor with increased ground clearance, metal underbody protection and two individual clutches in the rear wheel drive is still offered only with a 2.0-liter engine.

All the conveniences given by the creators of the Maverick remained with it after restyling, namely: a storage organizer under the rear seat cushion, recesses in the door panels for securing large cargo, a universal holder in the center of the cabin for various devices (trash can, cup holders or any other author’s “device” , printed on a 3D printer), two full-fledged household sockets with a power of 400 W (one is in the body, the other in the cabin), a multi-position tailgate with cargo locks (they are also bottle openers), recesses in the body for installing partitions and others useful little things.
The overall length of the pickup truck is from 5075 to 5095 mm depending on the modification, the width is 1839 mm , height — from 1740 to 1763 mm, wheelbase — 3076 mm, ground clearance — from 206 to 231 mm. The internal length of the body is 1382 mm. Load capacity — from 517 to 680 kg.
The updated Maverick will appear at American dealers at the end of this year. The production location is the same — the Ford plant in the Mexican city of Hermosillo.
