Gunmen have stormed Afghanistan’s largest university, opening fire as the packed campus held a book fair.
Students scrambled over walls as they tried to flee the sprawling Kabul University site, with local news channels reporting gunmen had opened fire in classrooms.
Early reports put the number of casualties at eight wounded, but fighting was ongoing on Monday afternoon and the toll was expected to rise. Some students were feared to be trapped in university buildings as the unidentified attackers battled security forces.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack and the Taliban issued a statement saying it was not involved.
"Gunshots still can be heard in the area but security forces have blocked it off," Ministry of Interior spokesman Tariq Arian told Reuters. "We don’t know whether we are dealing with a coordinated attack or something else." he said.
