Pressure rises on Donald Trump to concede election

What is Donald Trump’s next move? He is under mounting pressure to concede the US presidential race as George W Bush congratulated Joe Biden on his victory and said the election was "fundamentally fair". The former president became the most prominent Republican to draw a line under the election. With the Trump campaign escalating calls for donations to fight legal challenges, First Lady Melania Trump was reportedly privately urging her husband to concede. US Editor Ben Riley-Smith reports on a confused picture from the White House. This is what happens if Mr Trump refuses to concede the presidency. Before the 2016 election, Mr Trump boasted he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and people would still vote for him. Experts believe the courts may not be so forgiving now. Mr Trump faces a blizzard of lawsuits and the potential threat of jail after office.

Meanwhile, President-Elect Biden begins work to sweep away some of Mr Trump’s most controversial policies, using the powers of the Oval Office to remove key planks of his predecessor’s agenda. Aides of Mr Biden, whose vice president will be Kamala Harris, have privately hinted he plans to build the most diverse Cabinet in American history. But Boris Johnson will risk a rift with Mr Biden by pushing ahead with a Brexit law the president-elect has said he fears will jeopardise Northern Irish peace.

Hospital quarantine order over ‘mink virus’ fears

Britain’s hospitals have been ordered to quarantine patients with suspected "mink virus" in an effort to prevent a mutant strain of coronavirus from spreading to the UK. Vets in Denmark have begun culling 17 million mink after the "cluster five" mutation — which it is feared will be resistant to a vaccine — was found in 12 people, having jumped from animals. Britain banned entry to non-resident foreigners arriving from Denmark and imposed trade controls, threatening pork and bacon supplies. Bill Gardner has our exclusive report.

Absent royal: Prince Harry’s Cenotaph request denied

Prince Harry’s request for a wreath to be laid at the Cenotaph on his behalf was refused by royal courtiers. The Duke of Sussex had wanted to return to the UK for the event, but would have had no official role and was not invited. Instead, he was joined by the Duchess on a visit to the Los Angeles National Cemetery. Read Joe Shute‘s report from the Cenotaph, where the Queen looked on from a balcony on a Remembrance Sunday like no other. View a gallery of striking images.
