Arsenal mastering the dark arts: how Arteta's team spent almost 17 minutes at Newcastle

Arsenal and Newcastle United. The 39 Premier League meetings this season have been pleasantly poignant, with both managers criticizing each other for wasting time.

Mikel Arteta felt Newcastle were allowed to ruin a goalless draw at the Emirates in January, while Eddie Howe noted Arsenal's slow restarts away. 2-0 victory over St. James. Park on Sunday.

As officials at the World Cup in Qatar have begun adding significant stoppage time periods, more attention has been paid to the issue of playing time.

Arsenal's 51m 9s win over Newcastle was not particularly egregious, finishing 69th with the fewest goals per game in Premier League play this season. The average ball time in the Premier League this season is 54 minutes 44 seconds.

However, Arsenal have definitely applied some dark arts to 'manage' game and here's how they did it:

3 minutes

Newcastle almost started from the summer: Jacob Murphy hit the post and Joe Willock's shot was blocked in the first few minutes.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was understandably hoping to settle the situation with his first goal kick, with just under 32 seconds between the ball going out of play and Ramsdale kicking.

That strategy was also a feature of Arsenal's Anfield game last month, with Ramsdale suffering a mysterious eye injury after Andy Robertson missed Liverpool's first big chance of the game. This appears to be an attempt to stop waves of attacks in a hostile atmosphere.

Ramsdale's second goal of the game and again he takes his time before kicking the ball for a long time. Hardly the worst offense in the world, and at this early stage in the game, the crowd isn't worried yet.

Time Loss: 24 seconds

6 minutes< p> Arsenal skillfully plays with the Newcastle press and finds Bukayo Saka, who is fouled right in front of the halfway line.

Ben White stands over the free kick and thinks, and more than 30 seconds elapse between the whistle and White taking the free kick. The home crowd whistles and cheers.

Moments later, Newcastle canceled a penalty after checking Ware on the field, resulting in the longest stoppage of the first half.

Five minutes after Martin Odegaard scored the goal 39. After scoring the first goal, Jorginho received a hand in the back from Jolinton. A foul, no doubt, but Arsenal are in no hurry to restart the game, trying to consolidate their advantage.

Arsenal take a throw-in, Murphy throws the ball towards Granit Xhaka, who steps over the ball, allowing it to run away from him. Murphy then passes the ball to Oleksandr Zinchenko, who takes the throw-in. Moments later, Ødegaard and Gabriel Jesus strangled Fabian Schar to prevent a quick free kick.

Jesus is fouled on Arteta, which gives his manager the opportunity to give a couple of instructions. Jorginho looks like he's about to take a free kick, but he misses the ball and leaves White. More home fans whistling

In the third of five extra minutes before half-time, Xhaka falls holding his groin, causing an argument with Newcastle striker Callum Wilson. This dispute escalates into a row involving both groups of players and Newcastle kicks the ball out for a shot rather than returning the ball to Arsenal. By the time the game resumes, half will be over.

This total does not include War checks, stoppages of Shar, Saki and Jaka due to injury (when caught on the top of the foot) or any stoppages that are considered normal for the course of the match.

The referee blows his whistle after 51 minutes 30 seconds, which is clearly less than 45 minutes of playing time.

52 minutes

Not for the first time in the game, Jorginho is a player who buys Arsenal a foul before white gets over the free kick and tries to quell any potential Newcastle comeback.

Arsenal make their first substitution: Kieran Tierney replaces Zinchenko while Jorginho loses after a foul by Bruno Guimarães. Jorginho is slow to take a free kick and concedes it, and more than a minute has passed by the time play resumes. Note Newcastle's Joelinton complaining to referee Chris Kavanagh with his hand raised.

The ball hits Jesus with a left shoulder on the cheek, and he was lucky to get away without a card. Xhaka objects to the challenge of his teammate from Switzerland and again engages in verbal altercations. The little episode is more suited to Arsenal than Newcastle.

Three minutes after Newcastle's double substitution, Arsenal made their own with Thomas Partey and Leandro Trossard coming on as subs. Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli.

Something like a master class from Arsenal and Ramsdale on speeding up time.

After Ball's ambitious shot flies over the crossbar, Ramsdale needs 36 seconds to score a goal kick and then another 28 seconds for another goal kick shortly after.

In the 92nd minute, Ramsdale crosses Almiron and lays down on the ball, clearing it out 22 seconds later.

In the 94th minute, Ramsdale catches Newcastle's corner and holds the ball in gloves for 11 seconds. Tierney then throws the ball in from out of bounds with 22 seconds left.

In the dying embers, Shar and Nketiah push and push after an Arsenal striker blocks the ball near the corner flag. By the time play resumed, another 54 seconds had elapsed and Arsenal had scored points.

Time lost: 2 minutes 43 seconds out of six minutes added< /p>Total time< p>Arsenal managed to lose approximately 11 minutes 20 seconds in the second half, which in total with their first half gives only 17 minutes. Of course, the difference between a waste of time and a natural stoppage of play is a subjective judgment.

Take into account the Var check, two goals, some tough trials and five substitutions at Newcastle and you will see how 40 minutes have passed dead time. Newcastle will reproach themselves for the number of fouls and physical collisions that helped cut time, but Arsenal don't care.
