Fiat, part of the Stellantis Corporation, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the legendary plant in Lingotto (one of the districts of Turin) — elements we will see its architecture in the interiors of new Fiat mass models.
The Lingotto plant was built in 1923 and at that time was considered the second largest automobile plant in the world after the Ford River Rouge plant in the US state of Michigan, and it went down in history mainly as a textbook example of avant-garde and constructivism in industrial architecture. On the roof of the five-story building, there is an oval test track with profiled turns, which has become the hallmark of the enterprise. By the early 80s, the plant was outdated, in 1982 it was closed and gradually turned into a kind of Fiat culture house: today, concert halls, restaurants, an art gallery, a hotel, a shopping center and other public spaces are located in a giant building in Lingotto. The last upgrade of the complex was started in 2021: the track preserved on the roof was turned into the largest hanging garden in Europe, its opening took place just the other day.

The oval track on the roof and the general architecture of the former Lingotto plant have become a source of inspiration for Fiat designers when creating interiors for mass models of the near future. The new interior concept was presented yesterday by Fiat CEO Olivier Francois, who promised that next year we will see the ideas proposed in the concept on one of the new Fiat production models. The head of the Italian brand did not specify which model he was talking about, but there are few options — this is either the next generation Panda hatchback or the new Fiat Topolino, both, of course, are fully electric.

In the renders presented, we see a very laconic front panel, in the upper part of which there is an oval basket shelf stretched across the entire width of the cabin, reminiscent of a test track on the roof of the Lingotto factory. In the center of this «track» there is a rectangular screen of the multimedia system. The sliding table under the panel and the steering wheel also have an oval shape. The instrument panel and power plant mode selector are integrated into the steering wheel. The chairs are reminiscent of beach hammocks, their frames seem to be made from recycled materials, and the cylindrical headrests are audio speakers. » />
Another rendering shows a conventional hatchback body with panoramic pixel lighting, reminiscent of the windows of the Lingotto factory, a solution that will most likely also be applied to new Fiat production models. In general, it will be simple, stylish and elegant. I remember that the first generation Fiat Panda, revolutionary for its time (early 80s), was made according to the same recipe, and now there will be something similar, only with an even deeper historical context.
By the way, judging by the promo video featuring Olivier Francois, we are expecting a change in the Fiat logo in the near future, namely, a return to slanted sticks instead of the current round emblem with a red core.
In addition, Fiat intends to completely switch to electric vehicles in Europe by 2030.
