The Bavarian automaker is preparing a cargo-passenger version of its latest novelty — the latest generation of five. Photo spies have already come across test samples on several occasions, so we have the opportunity to imagine what the car will look like.
Last week saw the premiere of the new generation of the BMW 5 Series and its first all-electric version of the i5. So far, the car is presented only in the sedan, but soon the station wagon version with the traditional Touring prefix will join it. By the way, the history of the cargo-passenger modification of the «five» began in 1991, when a station wagon appeared in the back of the E34 (four years after the presentation of the sedan).

So far, we only have spy photos of camouflaged test vehicles taken before the premiere of the new 5 Series, but we can expect that up to the B-pillars, the station wagon will be identical to the sedan. In terms of proportions, the novelty is similar to other station wagons of the brand, while the only mystery is the shape of the rear side windows. It is already clear that the Touring, like the sedan, will receive an ascending window sill line. It is likely that the lanterns will also be borrowed from him, such a solution is already being used on the second station wagon of the company — 3 Series (although it is worth noting that in the previous generation of the “five” the station wagon had lanterns of the original form).

Like the sedan, the new Touring will be offered in traditional petrol and diesel versions, as well as an all-electric version named i5. The base engine for the “five” was a 2.0-liter “turbo-four” with a capacity of 190 hp. (310 Nm of torque). At the same time, now all modifications are equipped with an 8-speed «automatic» with an integrated 48-volt starter-generator, due to which the total output is 208 hp. (330 Nm). There is also an option with a 3.0-liter in-line “turbo-six” with a capacity of 381 hp. (540 Nm) in the 540i xDrive version, and six-cylinder diesels will appear next year. As for the electric modifications of the i5, there are two of them so far: the starting eDrive40 with a single electric motor on the rear axle (340 hp, 430 Nm) and the top two-engine M60 xDrive with 601 hp. (820 Nm).

The premiere of the novelty may take place during this year. By the way, in this generation the wagon will also receive a version of the M5.
