RM Sotheby's is currently hosting a High Speed: Paul Newman's Racing Legacy online auction featuring items that belonged to the famous Hollywood actor and successful race car driver Paul Newman. Lots include a 1998 Volvo V90 Volvette family station wagon powered by a 6.0-liter V8 LS2 engine from the sixth generation Chevrolet Corvette.
Paul Newman (1925-2008) lived a fairly long and eventful life, successfully realizing himself as an actor, racing driver, racing team manager, entrepreneur, philanthropist and head of the family. Newman has won numerous film awards, including an Academy Award, and the pinnacle of his racing career was a podium (second place) in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans marathon in 1979, then he drove a Porsche 935 for the Dick Barbour team. racing. In 1983, Paul Newman founded the Newman/Haas Racing team with racing manager Karl Haas, which has many victories in the CART, Champ Car and IndyCar series. It was the team that made for Newman in 2007 a unique Volvette sports wagon based on the 1998 Volvo V90. The name Volvette, as you might guess, is formed by the fusion of the words Volvo and Corvette.
Newman, like a happy father, loved Volvo cars for their practicality and comfort, but tried to combine the traditional qualities of «daddy cars» with his own racing passion. He started with a 1988 Volvo 740 station wagon with a Buick Grand National 3.8-liter V6 turbocharged sports coupe, then he drove a 1995 Volvo 960 with a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 from a Ford Mustang, and the Volvette became his a kind of surprise to the elderly Newman from his team, which knew his tastes perfectly and fitted him with another powerful «barn». Unfortunately, Newman didn't get to enjoy the Volvette as much as he died of cancer a year later. The Volvette, listed for sale by auction house RM Sotheby's, is in 100% original condition, which means it's a bit worn but still in good condition. Under the hood, there is a stock 3.0-liter in-line gasoline “six” with a capacity of 204 hp. took the 6.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 LS2 from the Chevrolet Corvette C6, from which the Swedish station wagon got a 4-speed automatic transmission GM 4L65E, its selector was neatly integrated into the cabin. The exact output of the engine is unknown — on the original Corvette C6 it produced 406 hp. 10 10/10Other modifications are a new top strut front suspension with elements from the Porsche 911 for better handling, a shorter driveshaft, new wiring and a thick exhaust pipe. The appearance remained stock, because Newman loved the classic Volvo style and did not want to change it, from non-standard parts, only perforated brake discs with red calipers are noticeable. In the cabin, in addition to the new automatic transmission selector, a new temperature gauge on the left A-pillar, an aftermarket multimedia system with a touch screen and a commemorative plaque from the team are installed.

The lot includes a stock Volvo V90 power unit and a complete set of documents for the machine itself and installed equipment. RM Sotheby’s experts in the description of the lot indicated an estimated cost of $ 20,000 — $ 25,000, but at the time of our publication, the maximum bid for the car was $ 40,000, and the auction will end on June 13, so the final cost could be much higher. For comparison, Paul Newman's aforementioned Volvo 740 with a Buick Grand National engine was sold at the Bring a Trailer auction in March this year for $80,740 (note the symbolic $740 at the end of the amount).
