The Avtotor Kaliningrad plant, in cooperation with the Chinese auto concern BAIC, has begun preparations for the production of the BAIC X55 compact crossover, several copies, industrial production will begin in the third quarter of this year.
Avtotor and BAIC announced cooperation in April this year: the Kaliningrad plant has already mastered the assembly of two models — the BAIC X35 subcompact crossover and the BAIC U5 compact sedan Plus, by the end of this year, it will master five more — BAIC X55 and BAIC X7 crossovers, BAIC BJ40 Plus and BAIC BJ60 frame SUVs, as well as a certain BAIC electric car, whose name has not yet been announced. Now the plant is preparing to launch the BAIC X55, we will tell you about it.
In China, the BAIC X55 is known as the Beijing X6, the X55 index is for export, it was invented so that there would be no problems with BMW, which also has a crossover with the X6 index. The premiere of the BAIC X55/Beijing X6 took place in the fall of 2021, the crossover entered the home market in 2022. The BAIC X55 is based on the BMFA modular platform in its latest version 2.0, the front suspension is of the McPherson type, the rear is an independent multi-link.

Overall length BAIC X55 — 4620 mm, width — 1886 mm, height — 1680 mm, wheelbase — 2735 mm. It turns out that the BAIC X55 is comparable in size to such cars as the Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV4, in Russia some call them medium-sized, but in fact, by modern standards, this is already a compact class. The larger crossover BAIC X7 (it also has a BMFA platform) is a medium-sized crossover with an overall length of 4745 mm and a wheelbase of 2800 mm.

BAIC X55 is equipped with a non-alternative 1.5-liter gasoline «turbo» with direct fuel injection, its maximum output is 188 hp. and 305 Nm, the gearbox is only a 7-speed «automatic» type DCT (with two clutches), the drive is only front-wheel drive, acceleration to 100 km/h takes 8 s, the maximum speed is 200 km/h. The curb weight of the Chinese version of the crossover is 1550 kg, the volume of the fuel tank is 53 liters.

In China, BAIC X55 costs from 99,900 to 153,900 yuan (from 1.14 million to 1.76 million rubles at the current exchange rate), depending on the configuration. We, as usual, will be much more expensive, especially since the press service of Avtotor reports that «the model is distinguished by maximum equipment, a large number of electronic systems, intelligent assistants of the latest generation and other devices.» Now Avtotor is just calibrating the car's electronics to Russian standards, the level of hardware localization at the start of production will be minimal, but then it is planned to gradually increase it. Russian prices and configurations have not been announced yet.
Add that Avtotor also produces cars of Chinese brands Kaiyi and SWM, here, as we recently learned, the Foton medium-duty cabover electric truck was registered, the official Russian premiere of which has not yet taken place. The potential capacity of Avtotor is about 250,000 cars a year, so perhaps other Chinese brands will want to localize their cars here.
