Volvo Cars, owned by the Chinese holding Geely, has completely declassified its new junior model, the EX30 subcompact electric crossover. Sales have already begun, there is an all-wheel drive twin-engine version that can reach the first «hundred» in 3.6 seconds.
The appearance of the Volvo EX30 was revealed last week on patent images leaked to the Web, but now a full-fledged official premiere has taken place. The EX30 is a very important model for Volvo Cars, the small SUV should become its best seller and help reach annual global sales of 1.2 million cars by the end of 2025, which is about twice what was sold in 2022. The Volvo EX30 has all the makings for market success, including an attractive price: in Germany, for example, the basic version of the EX30 costs from 36,590 euros, while for the updated Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback you need to pay at least 39 995 euros, and despite the fact that Volvo is a premium brand, and Volkswagen is not. In addition, Volvo will promote the EX30 subscription as actively as possible, the rates are also very attractive — from 599 euros per month.

The Volvo EX30 is based on Geely's modular SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform with 400-volt architecture, this platform is already familiar to us from other novelties of the Chinese holding, including smart #1, smart #3, Polestar 4 and Zeekr X. Inside, there is Swedish minimalism taken to the extreme: there is no instrument panel on the front panel at all, it is built into the main and only multimedia screen with a diagonal of 12.3 inches. The door cards are completely “bare”, they have no pockets for small items, no audio system speakers, no power window buttons (they are located on a small remote control built into the center armrest). Door handles are made in a deliberately old-fashioned style — thin and chrome, but the «grainy» recycled trim materials are just the latest squeak of automotive fashion. The audio system is also arranged in a fashionable way — it is a soundbar in the front panel with four speakers with a total power of 100 W plus a subwoofer. Higher-end versions have a more powerful 1040-watt Harman Kardon sound system with nine speakers and a subwoofer.

The basic version of the crossover is called Single Motor, it is equipped with a single electric motor on the rear axle, delivering 200 kW (272 hp) and 343 Nm, and a lithium-iron-phosphate battery with a capacity of 51 kWh (of which 49 kWh are available to the consumer). Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 5.7 s, the maximum speed, like all modern Volvos, is limited at around 180 km/h. The range on a single charge is 344 km on the WLTP cycle. The maximum charging power is 134 kW.

The Single Motor Extended Range version differs from the previous one by increasing to 480 kmpower reserve on a single charge, a lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt battery with a capacity of 69 kWh is installed here (of which 64 kWh are available to the consumer), the maximum charging power has been increased from 134 to 153 kW. The first «hundred» Volvo EX30 Single Motor Extended Range is gaining in 5.3 seconds.

The Volvo EX30 will be produced only in China for the time being, and from here it will go to all key markets for the Swedish brand, including the USA. Next year, an off-road version of the EX30 Cross Country with increased ground clearance, a protective plastic body kit and other adventure «ammunition» will appear on sale, technical details about this version are not yet available.
