Nadine Dorries resigned as Conservative MP shortly before she was denied a peerage on Boris Johnson's resignation honors list.

The former culture secretary said that she immediately steps down from her seat in Mid Bedfordshire, prompting a potentially tricky by-election for Rishi Sunak.

Mr Johnson's list of awards was released on Friday, but Ms Dorris did not appear on it despite repeated reports that she will be nominated for a peerage.

A seat in the House of Lords would have meant that she could no longer sit as an MP. Instead, her candidacy was returned to the Lords Review Committee, which would have prevented a by-election in her constituency.

However, her unexpected resignation means that there will now be a by-election regardless.< /p>

Both Labor and the Liberal Democrats believe her majority of 24,664 could be ousted as Mr Sunak faces one of his biggest electoral tests as prime minister.

The Liberal Democrats will launch their first campaign flyers on Saturday and send dozens of activists to Middle Bedfordshire over the weekend.

Mr Sunak was accused of “rewarding for breaking the rules” after Downing Street officials involved in the partygate scandal were included in the list of honorary titles upon retirement.

Martin Reynolds, nicknamed “Party Marty” by colleagues after he posted Bring Your Own Drink. An invitation to a party during self-isolation by a companion of the bathhouse.

Shelly Williams-Walker, former Downing Street operations chief, nicknamed DJ SWW after she was allegedly in charge of music at the number 10 party on the eve of the funeral the late Duke of Edinburgh, became a lady.

Mr Johnson's sacking honorary list also includes seven of his friends and close political allies in the House of Lords.

These include Charlotte Owen, Mr Johnson's 30-year-old former special adviser, who becomes the most a young life peer, and Ross Kempsell, former political director of the Conservative campaign headquarters, is only a few months older than Miss Owen and becomes the second youngest life peer.

Just over an hour before the list was released, Ms Dorris tweeted that she was leaving the House of Commons after 18 years as an MP:

Today I informed the Chief Whip that I am resigning as MP for Mid Bedfordshire with immediate effect.
It was an honor to be MP for such a wonderful constituency, but now it's time for another to take the reins.

Ms. Dorries was expected to be on the honor roll along with Alok Sharma, former Cop26 President, Alistair Jack, Scottish Secretary, and Nigel Adams, former Cabinet Minister.

She told TalkTV that “that something significantly” changed her mind about remaining a deputy, saying: “I’m not going to chat. I have a few thoughts and things to think about.

“I didn't want to call a by-election, but I honestly got over myself and it's time to do the right thing.”

One senior government source said: “She was not on the list. She is unhappy with this. She decided to vote with her feet.”

A Downing Street source said Sunak was not involved in removing Dorris from the list, saying it was a matter for the House of Lords Appointments Commission (Holac).

They said: “The complete approved list has been sent to Holac. The process is that the outgoing prime minister draws up a list of honorary titles upon resignation, and the incumbent prime minister sends it to Holak.

“Then they do due process and then send the approved list. Holak returned the approved list and the prime minister did nothing; he has just sent the whole list to the king.”

Miss Dorris “originally nominated with honors.” Sharma and Mr. Jack to Holaku.

However, the body ruled that they could not be given a peerage, as they expired six months before the general election.

This was due to the fact that any a review done now will be considered obsolete by the time of the next election in 18 months.

On this occasion, a note was presented from Lord Bew, chairman of Holac. at 10 Downing Street could reveal The Telegraph.

The decision meant that four names were not on the list that was given to Mr Sunak a week ago. It then remained for Mr. Sunak to clear the remaining names on the list.

When this position was explained in detail to Ms. Dorris on Friday, she decided to immediately resign as MP.

Ms Dorries said she was 'disappointed' that someone 'born on one of Britain's poorest streets' would not become a peer.

One senior Tory supporter was skeptical of the No 10 insists on not changing the list.

They said: “Rishi Sunak may not have changed the list, but it is very likely that Downing Street would have told the commission about her personal views on some of the candidates and those he did not approve. Otherwise, I don't understand why Nadine Dorris wouldn't have made the list.”

A Downing Street source said the senior defender's claim was “completely untrue”.

Mr Johnson has also awarded knighthoods and women's titles to many of his close allies during his tenure, including eight Conservative MPs.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the former business secretary, is knighted, while Prity Patel, the former home secretary, and Amanda Milling, the former Conservative chairman, are knighted.

Conor Burns, a staunch ally of Mr. Johnson also was knighted, as was Simon Clarke, former Secretary of Education.

Michael Fabricant, MP for Lichfield, was knighted, Andrea Jenkins, former Minister of Education, became a lady, and Sir Bill Cash , a Euroskeptic veteran, became a member of the Order of Honorary Cavaliers.

Lord Newby, leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, called the retired Mr Johnson's honors list “a clear failure of leadership” on Mr Sunak's part.

He said: “His promise to rule with integrity has been completely broken . Boris Johnson has caused crisis after crisis in this country. His lack of honor means he didn't deserve the list of honors at all.

However, Sunak relented, rewarding Johnson for his reckless behavior as prime minister. The British public will be outraged by this rash decision.

“Rishi Sunak must immediately appear before Parliament to justify his cowardly failure to block Boris Johnson's list of awards.”

There are also accolades for Jack Doyle, the former No. the occasion of the prime minister's birthday in the Cabinet, who receives a CBE, and Dan Rosenfield, the former chief of staff, who was reportedly in attendance at a closed Christmas. a quiz to see who gets a peerage.

Their awards were approved by the Cabinet, led by Oliver Dowden.

Angela Rayner, Deputy Labor Leader, said: “This is a heinous insult, that those who planned Covid parties and threw drunken parties in lockdown while families couldn't mourn loved ones should now get gongs from Rishi Sunak.

“As Boris Johnson faces new allegations and investigations about his behavior, the privilege in the list of honors is clearly unfounded and completely undeserved.

“It is a shame that Rishi Sunak could not resist the outrageous demands of his former boss and agreed to give away the prizes of this carousel of friends.”

“We went from a lavender list to a catalog of buddies. This is pure corruption.”
