Lotus Elise is back as a Nyobolt electric car that can be charged in just 6 minutes

British battery startup Nyobolt teamed up with design studio Callum to develop a stylish electric sports car based on the discontinued Lotus Elise, its main technical feature is fast battery charging.

The small and light petrol sports car Lotus Elise was produced from 1996 to 2021, its aluminum adhesive platform gave life to several models of other brands – Tesla Roadster of the first generation, Opel Speedster, Hennessey Venom GT, Melkus 2000 and Detroit Electric SP:01. The Nyobolt presented today is the next and most interesting derivative, because Julian Thomson, the author of the earliest version of the Lotus Elise (S1 series) with round headlights, worked on its design. Thomson, now at GM, worked on the Nyobolt project as a freelancer for British design studio Callum.

Callum Studios was founded in 2019 by Julian Thomson's former Jaguar colleague and now independent designer Ian Callum. In its short history, Callum has already unveiled some interesting projects: reimagining the first generation Aston Martin Vanquish from the early 2000s, designing the interior of the Prodrive Hunter off-road supercar, and coming up with an interesting concept for car interiors made from food waste materials.

In the Nyobolt project, Julian Thomson, as it were, created the Lotus Elise S1 anew, taking into account modern trends in automotive design. Nyobolt is 100 mm wider and 150 mm longer than its historical ancestor, rather large 19-inch wheels have been registered in the wheel arches, “optics” are now fully LED, and instead of traditional rear-view mirrors, cameras with ultra-low image transmission delay have been installed. Nyobolt's interior design has unfortunately not been revealed yet.

The Nyobolt electric sports car weighs around 1 ton and can drive 250 km on one charge.

Nyobolt is the name of a startup founded in 2019 by a group of British scientists. Nyobolt is developing innovative battery cells, the main feature of which is high charging speed. Nyobolt does not say exactly how this speed is achieved, but only gives numbers: the battery of a Nyobolt sports car with a capacity of 35 kWh can be fully charged in less than 6 minutes, which is comparable to the time of refueling a traditional “hydrocarbon” car at a gas station.

But, of course, there is a catch: only a 1 MW terminal can provide such a high charging speed – there are practically no such terminals in the public domain, but, for example, Tesla promises a large number of such terminals in the future, it needs them to quickly charge Tesla Semi trucks. Nyobolt, in turn, promises that high charging power will not reduce battery life – this is also the know-how of a young British company.

Nyobolt is going to begin serial production of its batteries next year and introduce them not only in electric vehicles, but also in household appliances, robots, stationary energy storage devices, and so on. The Nyobolt sports car is, in fact, just a demonstration stand for new technologies; not a word is said about its plans for at least small-scale production in a press release. It is possible that it is Callum who wants to release a batch of these sports cars – there will definitely be those who want to buy a revived and environmentally friendly Lotus Elise S1 from eminent British designers.
