Nio ET5 Touring: a stylish Chinese electric station wagon for Europe

Chinese company Nio wants to boost sales in Europe with the ET5 Touring, a mid-size electric wagon that has no alternatives yet in the premium segment .

Founded in 2014 by entrepreneur William Lee, Nio continues to teeter on the brink, with Nio posting a $690 million loss in the first quarter of this year, 2.7 times its loss in January-March 2022 – such dynamics are very unnerving for investors and managing managers of the company. Sales in China at Nio are unstable: the company started the year well, from January to May 43,854 electric vehicles were sold, which is 15.8% more than in the same period last year, but it was in May that sales decreased by 12.4% to 6155 units .

Nio electric cars have a good reputation, but are expensive, so Nio can only dream of such a wild jump in sales, such as BYD, with its very wide model line. In addition, Nio is renovating its lineup too intensively even by Chinese standards, which costs a lot of money, and Nio also spent a lot of money on developing its own network of battery replacement terminals – hence such huge losses. In early June, Nio reduced prices for the entire lineup in China by 6-9% – apparently, being horrified by the May statistics.

Nio entered the European market in 2021, its electric vehicles are currently only available in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, but the geography will gradually expand. The company made the ET5 Touring station wagon with an eye to Europe, where this body is still very popular, and it is in the premium segment, which includes all Nio models. In the electronic database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry, Nio ET5 Touring surfaced back in March, and today the official premiere took place.

In technical terms, the Nio ET5 Touring completely repeats the ET5 sedan, which debuted in 2021, and even the dimensions of the two bodies are absolutely identical: length – 4790 mm, width – 1960 mm, height – 1499 mm, wheelbase – 2888 mm. Moreover, the station wagon did not even get special taillights, that is, maximum unification with the sedan, but at the same time the ET5 Touring looks stylish and sporty – Europeans should like this image.

1/5 2/5 3/5 4/5 5/5The body of the Nio ET5 Touring is made of high-strength steel and aluminum, and there is no center bar in the roof, as a 1.35 m2 panoramic glass roof comes as standard. The declared torsional rigidity of the body is 32,000 Nm/degree, the aerodynamic drag coefficient cx is 0.25. The volume of the trunk is 450 liters, taking into account the underground – 492 liters, with the second row seats folded down – 1300 liters. Permissible load on the rails – 75 kg. Permissible weight of the towed trailer – 1400 kg. Front suspension – double wishbones, rear – multi-link. The front wheels are equipped with sufficiently powerful ventilated disc brakes with 4-piston calipers.

From the driver's seat, the station wagon is no different from the sedan: rich trim, 10.2-inch instrument screen, 12.8-inch multimedia screen, the talking head of the Nomi robot assistant. The standard equipment includes a full set of electronic driver assistants and a full set of airbags, including a central one between the front seats – it is needed to get the maximum 5 stars of the Euro NCAP rating. Also included is a cool audio system with 23 speakers and a 4K video recorder.

Like the sedan, the Nio ET5 Touring is equipped with a twin-engine power plant (one per axle): the maximum output of the front is 150 kW (204 hp) and 280 Nm, the rear is 210 kW (286 hp) and 420 Nm, maximum cumulative output – 360 kW (490 hp) and 700 Nm. Up to 100 km/h, the station wagon accelerates in 4 seconds, the maximum speed is limited at around 200 km/h. The battery capacity is 75, 100 or 150 kWh, the range on one charge according to the Chinese CLTC cycle is 530, 680 and 990 km, respectively, but there are no batteries for 150 kWh on sale yet.

Despite the fact that Nio ET5 Touring is addressed primarily to Europeans, it will go on sale first in China, prices have already been announced, orders are accepted: wagon with 75 kWh battery costs from 298,000 yuan (3.5 million rubles translated at the current exchange rate), with a 100 kWh battery – from 356,800 yuan (4.2 million rubles). You can buy Nio ET5 Touring without a battery, then its price will be 228,000 yuan (11,530 rubles), for 100 kWh – 1,680 yuan (19,765 rubles).
