The accident occurred when a truck and a public bus collided at a highway junction near the town of Carberry in the South-West. Manitoba, 105 miles west of Winnipeg.
In a tweet, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed regret at what he called the «incredibly tragic» news.
«I express my deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones today, and I keep the wounded in my thoughts. I can't imagine the pain the victims are experiencing,” said Mr. Trudeau.
The Winnipeg Free Press reported that wheelchairs and crumpled walkers were left next to the damaged bus operated by Handi-Transit, which transports people. the elderly and people with disabilities.
Rob Hill, commander of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba, said there were 25 people on the bus and authorities deployed all of their provincial resources to the scene. Ten people were taken to hospitals.
Helicopter ambulances from Winnipeg and Regina were dispatched to the scene.
The crash brought back memories of a 2018 bus crash in neighboring Saskatchewan. which killed 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos minor league hockey team.
