Egyptian authorities say they caught a tiger shark
A Russian swimmer was eaten in the Red Sea during an attack by a tiger shark that his father watched helplessly behind what was happening, described it as a «meat grinder».
Video footage online showed the attack in full on Thursday, when 23-year-old Vladimir Popov called his «dad» repeatedly while trying to swim away from the shark.
At one point, he appeared to be wrestling with the animal, but was turned upside down with his legs dangling in the air. A few moments later, the shark dragged him under the water, and he did not emerge.
“What help can you provide? This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was simply dragged under the water,” Yuri Popov, the young man’s father, told 112. We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark and it happened in seconds.»

A small boat approached the spot where Vladimir was attacked just a few seconds after he sank, but by then it was too late. A video from the scene later shows the fishermen beating the shark on the shore.
In a sign of the growing divisions sparked by the war between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian Twitter and Telegram users used the shark attack to taunt the Russians. In one of the many Ukrainian cartoons published online, a shark stands next to a drowning Russian, giving a thumbs up.
Aleksiy Arestovich, a former adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, criticized his compatriots, ridiculing the murder. “Judging by the number of jokes … about a Russian killed by a shark, dehumanization has already begun. And if you have it, then you lost,” he said.
It is reported that Vladimir Popov was a permanent resident of Egypt and lived in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada, where he spent time with his father and girlfriend.

The attack took place at the Dream Beach resort and tourists in the area were told to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of the staff.

Egyptian authorities said they caught a tiger shark that attacked a swimmer and are conducting laboratory tests on the animal.
The animal has exhibited «anomalous behavior» and water activities in the area will be suspended until Sunday as a precaution, they added.
