Martin Tyler is leaving Sky, the voice of football for decades
For my football-obsessed generation through the 1980s, there is four TV commentary titans; Brian Moore, John Motson, Barry Davis and Martin Tyler.
Broadcasting legends who created the vocal soundtrack of our youth, their ability to capture an epic sporting moment is as impressive as a photographer capturing the perfect shot of a game-winning goal or a celebration.
Martin «Aguero-ooh»…! I swear you'll never see anything like it again» sits next to Moore watching Michael Thomas run off to win the title for Arsenal in 1989 and yelling «Now it can be captured» is one of the most quoted lines of commentary in the history of English football. .

As someone who has become Martin's colleague and friend, I can to say that his departure from Sky deserves all the appreciation he receives. There is no doubt that his departure represents the end of an era, as well as a great career at Sky.
From a personal standpoint, from a fan to my time as a player and now my TV career, Martin always seemed to have the happy ability to be there to say the right words at the right time.
I first realized Martin's talent for commentary as a fan.
During Everton's glorious 1984-85 season, live games were rare and Martin worked for Granada television. Recordings of highlights, whether league matches on Match of the Day or European matches on ITV, swirled around Bootle.
When we recreated the goals of Andy Grey, Kevin Sheedy and Trevor Steven on the playing field. , we would do this by repeating the lines of the commentator.
“Now it's decided. Rotterdam, they're coming! Martin enthusiastically proclaimed when Trevor Stephen scored the third goal against Bayern Munich in the European Cup Winners' Cup semi-final.

Since then, Martin has named many cases that have had a special impact on me.
< p>I first met him before the 1996 FA Youth Cup final against West Ham when he visited the Liverpool players at the team's hotel before the first match at Upton Park. As a rule, he was engaged in research — he treated the youth cup game with the same importance as the Champions League final or the decisive title.
Knowing who he was, I was more than happy to chat. For the first time, I met someone who might be more football-obsessed than I am.
A year later, Martin was the commentator when I scored my debut goal at Anfield. «A teenager did it!»
Again, whenever I think about this incident, the accompanying words are part of it.

After I moved to Sky, Martin was an incredible help as I and other ex-pros moved on to co-commenting. I know that everyone who watches thinks it's incredibly easy to sit and watch the game and say what you think. I also know that other commentators have spent hours doing homework to prepare for the games. But what I can tell you first hand is that it is impossible to imagine that anyone could prepare more thoroughly than Martin.
And they could not have been more attentive to getting the job done right in the day . The first time I commented with him, he shook my hand and looked at me in a way that said that as long as we're here to enjoy it, we have to be professional and do it well. I learned so much sitting next to him, understanding how and when to use the right words to match the images.
I cannot appreciate Martin's work enough and how much his pre-match «and it's live» statement will be missed by all those who enjoyed his commentary and were helped by his thoroughness and professionalism.
🎙️ 'And you guessed it, it's ONLINE!'
It's time to start the match at Anfield. Martin Tyler and @Carra23 look forward to your comments!

But I know it. The man we at Sky know as «the voice» would never hang up the mic forever. Wherever a football match takes place, Martin will be ready and willing to comment.
And, like me, a young fan of the 80s, millions of fans will appreciate how their fondest football memories are enhanced when they listen to one comments by Martin Tyler.
